Day 1 of the build

We were up this morning but not ready when the builder arrived - Jon was not impressed. The builder didn't start work straight away as he was waiting for a new guy to turn up but he didn't show. He asked us to move our cars as he did not want any of the car port to blow onto our cars. He also said that he would be leaving the rubbish down on the grass near the gate as the owner did not want to have a skip. Jon told him that was not acceptable as we didn't want to be living with a pile of rubbish for the next few months.

Not long after the owner called and fortunately for him I answered. He told me that a lot of the old car port would be used with the new build so he did not want to throw it away. We came to a decision of leaving it against the fence down the drive to the side of the house and they have now stacked it all there and very tidy it is. The rest of the rubble the builder will take away in his trailer.

I left for the shop and Jon would be picked up later. Fingers crossed it goes well. I have told Jon not to get stressed by it but he says he is going to look for another house to move. That, I think, would be silly as by the time we can move hopefully, the new garage will be built. I left the house with a splitting headache.

It was lovely being at the shop and we chatted and were busy for most of the morning. Madori, the Japanese lady was back, she has been off with her two children for the school holidays. She is such a lovely girl and enjoys listening to Sharon, Les and I. She loves the cakes I take in every week and always asks for the recipes.

I left the shop just after one and went to do my shopping and I got back to the house at 2.30. I had to park my car at the bottom of the drive and carry all my bags up to the house and of the three men now working on the garage not one offered to help.

They have got a lot of it down but the wind is making it difficult. I went indoors and put my shopping away and made a quick sandwich. One of the builders knocked on the door and asked if we had a bin he could put some plastic in that he was taking off the roof. It was all breaking up as it was so brittle and I said that would be OK.

I went out to collect Jon from the office and he was more than ready to come home and didn't do much for the rest of the day.

The builders left just after five and cleared up very well. They won't now be back till Tuesday as it is bank holiday weekend. He took photos before he left to send to the owner I imagine and keep him up to date with what is getting done.

Once he had gone we went outside to have a look and I too took some photos. We had two ducks in the drive and I just managed to grab Totty before she grabbed them. I have no idea where they have come from as I have not seen a pond around here and I have never seen a duck. The more I chased them down the drive as soon as I turned my back they followed me up again. Totty was going crazy at the door and next door Helen was on her deck holding her cat so that she did not get them. Eventually between Helen and myself we got them out to the street and they went off somewhere.

Unfortunately, when we looked in the bin they had filled it to the top and had stood on it as it was really packed in. The binmen only came yesterday so we have a week with nowhere to put our rubbish. Jon has a lot of clinical waste from Bertie which goes in the rubbish so we need a bin - not impressed. We had to get a bag and transfer it all and tie it up and I shall tell the builder that he needs to get rid of it as we are only allowed our wheelie bin and if we take it to the tip we have to pay for it. Not a good start really. I think my few words to Jon must have done the trick as he seemed to take it all very well!!!

I cooked a nice dinner tonight and we both enjoyed it. It is all in the planning and that is what I have to do - plan ahead and hopefully I can make meals that satisfy us both and don't upset Jon.

Time to go to bed now an hopefully we can get out and do something tomorrow as the forecast is not bad but Sunday and Monday forecast is awful. This has been a very wet and windy spring.

WEATHER
Mostly sunny bu a cold wind again 16 degrees
