A check up with the surgeon.

I managed to get out of bed on time this morning and was ready to go to the hospital which is more than can be said for Jon. He was waiting for Bertie to perform and when he didn't was very worried that he would while we were at the clinic.

Typical when you have lots of time you have no trouble finding a parking place!! I dropped Jon at the door of the hospital and went to find a parking place and I did, straight away!! We got to the clinic 20 minutes too soon even after it taking Jon a long time to walk slowly down the corridor to the clinic.

We went into the consulting room on time which was good and the nurse removed the small dressing Jon still had on his tummy and he stayed lying on the bed as it was more comfortable than sitting.

Mark came in and examined his tummy and his bottom and said it was all healing well but obviously his bottom was going to take more time.

He told us that all the histology reports were good and he had achieved good clear margins around the tumour and that all the lymph nodes removed were clear which is all very good. He once again apologised to Jon for not being able to do the operation he had wanted and said he feels he let him down as he really thought it would have been possible. He did say that Jon would need a course of chemotherapy and they would be in contact in the next few weeks to arrange that. Unfortunately, he said it was going to be an aggressive course as they wanted to make sure there was nothing left of the cancer and as Jon was so young they wanted to make sure it was all gone so that he could have a long life. I am not sure that Jon realises what that could mean but we will cross that bridge when we come to it and if he has to lose his hair then so be it.

We also spoke to Helen, the stoma nurse, while we were with Mark and we talked of various options for Jon the main one being a smaller bag - mini Bertie!! At the moment the bag sits just where his trousers usually are so they hang down under his tummy - a big beer belly would come in handy here!! Jon also has to wear his shirts outside his trousers which he says, looks scruffy. Hopefully, in another few weeks the stoma area will shrink and he can wear a smaller bag. In six months they will consider the irrigation method which he would do once a day and they you just need a small cap on the stoma and a bag. She told us about  school teacher who uses this method so as not to disrupt her day in class and it works well and I think it would be a good way for Jon to go.

We left the hospital and Jon managed to walk all the way back to the car and we went for our first cup of coffee in a cafe and he really enjoyed it. I think we both feel very nervous when we are out as we are not sure how things are going to go. I think it is good for him to get out as being in the house all the time is not a good idea and you lose confidence.

We went home and I phoned the district nurse to get some bags for Jon and we just pottered about till lunch.

I went to the Red Cross shop and had a chat to Les and Sharon, I just needed to get out for a while. I then went to the supermarket and did my shopping.

I got home just as Jon was getting up from a nap and we had a cup of tea.

Poor Tot only got her walk at 5.00 as every time I went to take her we had a shower.

Occupational Therapy called when Jon was asleep and I noticed they had left a message to call them but it was too late when I noticed so Jon will call them tomorrow.

We had dinner and watched some TV. Jon said he felt he had made some progress today and did actually manage to sit at the table and do his puzzle for a while so hopefully he is healing. I think we tend to forget that it is only three weeks since the surgery. Being discharged from hospital so early now makes you think you should be better than you are but it all takes time and patience.

WEATHER
Sunny spells and a few showers 19 degrees.
