I'm a winner!

It was incredibly cold this morning when I woke up and I had had to get up and put some socks on last night as it was so cold I could not sleep, a hot water bottle tonight I think as it is going to be colder.

I had to give in and put the electric heater on in the kitchen as I was just too cold having breakfast. I left Tot on the sofa all curled up in the sun and went out to my Golden Olympic Games.

I arrived at the same time as the rest of our team and we found our allocated table but we were all very cold so kept our layers on for a while. Morning tea and coffee was served with cheese scones, fruit cake, fruit scones and cream scones, all very nice and the hot coffee was very welcome.

We then put our wigs on and picked up our flags and banners and entered the hall to start the games. We had a warm up with some popular Kiwi songs which involved doing silly actions and then we sang the National Anthem and I am now getting quite good at remembering the words but not the Maori verse!

The hall was set out with various games and we started with noodle hockey and it was really good fun. The teams sat opposite each other and were given a noodle (the foam things you use in the pool). Cones were set out at the end of the chairs as goals and once the beach ball was dropped into the middle we had to try and beat it with the noodle and score goals. I never knew, until today, that I was so VERY competitive! I beat that ball to within an inch of its life and gave some of the ladies a good whack, too. At the end of our 14 minutes we were very warm but the other team beat us by a couple of goals.

We played bowls, skittles, table tennis, getting a ball into a basketball net, hoops over cones and badminton which I have not played for years but I was quite good!!! We had a quiz but I was not good at that as it was mostly Kiwi sports people but I did get the ones about cricket and golf.

The best bit for me was the hockey which I haven't played since school. My keep fit teacher was so impressed with my speed!! We had a red ball which was worth one point if you scored but every so often the 'ref' dropped in a green ball which was worth five points per goal. When the green ball came in it was more like a rugby scrum! I did really well at that and scored lots of goals. I was shattered at the end and was glad it was our last activity. I think, tomorrow, I am going to be sore in parts of my body that I had forgotten I had!

It was all so much fun and I was, at nearly 62, probably the youngest in our team and the eldest was 85. There were a few people in wheelchairs and also some very fit and active tennis players. We went back into the area where we had coffee and they had the presentation. We didn't win the games but our team did win the 'best dressed' team prize.

I stayed for a chat with my keep fit teacher and we had a coffee. When I got up to go I could hardly walk!!

I had lunch when I got back and then took Tot out for a walk.

My friend Alison called and we had a long chat. I lit the fire at 4.30 as I really don't want to be cold again tonight.

We need more logs so I found a number in the newspaper and they will call in the morning to arrange delivery. I have ordered pine as it lights easily and gum as it 'burns hot' and we really need that in this house. When we have to move house next March I am determined to find a house with a heat pump as this is just too cold!!

Jon called and he is fine but now very tired during the day and goes to bed at about 9.00 and sleeps all night which is very unusual for him but I am glad he does. He had his treatment on time today but it was a late afternoon one anyway. They are having the machines serviced at the moment which is why they are having issues with appointment times. It was -2 in Hamilton last night but he does have central heating so didn't notice.

I had some soup for dinner and then did some ironing and then watched TV. I am just going to do my hot water bottle now and then go to bed and hopefully I won't hurt too much in the morning!!

WEATHER
VERY cold, sunny start then 15 degrees
