Can you believe it is February already?
I got up showered, washed my hair and did a few jobs around the house and before I knew it was time to get Totty to the vet for her rabies vaccination.
As I arrived the vet was just coming out into the car park with a huge black Labrador and its owner as he wanted to see how it was walking. Poor Totty nearly died and stood trembling!
I took her in and we weighed her and she was standing on the scales shaking from head to foot. Totty weighs 7.3 kgs, she has lost 500gr, this Labrador, I later heard, weighs 47.5 kgs!!!!
We sat and waited and the lab and its elderly owners went back into the consultation room and I heard them talking about the poor dog who was only nine years old but he can hardly walk due to arthritis made worse by his size. How can you let your dog get like that? The vet went out of the room and I heard them talking to each other saying they would 'have to cut his toast out in the mornings'!!! When the vet went back in they told him they don't give him any of their food!!! I hope they have had a wake up call and can get him into shape again. He was given pain relief and he needs to go back next week. Shame I won't find out how he goes!!
With all this going on we were very late for our appointment. A young guy came in with a beautiful jet black Labrador puppy called Cilla (Cilla Black maybe?) He had only had her three weeks and she was so cute. Totty and Cilla sat either ends of the room and 'talked' to each other, it was very funny.
Still waiting and a lady came in with a cat wrapped in a towel, I can't understand people not putting them in a cage? The cat sounded like it was choking and I thought it was due to the tightly wrapped towel but the lady said she had a cold and it would not go away. They had no appointment and had just turned up expecting to be seen. They were told the vet was running late but they said they would wait. I told them my appointment was already half an hour late.
So we all sat and chatted, including the dogs, and the cat continued to make strange noises.
Eventually the lab and owners came out with instructions for him to lose at least another 10 kgs The owners could do with losing the same, too and then they would be a healthy family! Harsh but true!
Totty and I went in and the vet gave her a good check over and told me that her sight was not very good due to cataracts which I did know she had but not how bad it was. I asked if this would be why she does not like to go out and he said it could be. He told me that he had discussed Totty with the other vet and they thought it would be a good idea to have some blood tests done to check her kidneys are good so she will have them done on Monday. I can't even begin to think what we will do if they say she is not fit to travel!!!! She had the rabies jab and he said she might be quiet for the next 24 hours or so and finally we were free to go. Only took an hour!! Jon would be wondering where his coffee was as I said I would be there about 10.30!
The cat had gone from the waiting room but the puppy was still there and being very patient. I didn't pay as they didn't know the price for rabies vaccine as it is not a common one so I will settle it on Monday.
I got home and put Totty in and made a sandwich for Jon as they said he has to eat more then went to the hospital and stopped for coffees in the café in the entrance. The only muffins they had were chocolate and banana so I bought one.
Jon was looking better and had had a shower but said he felt very weak. He really hates being in hospital and finds something wrong with everything and I am sure the other patients must get fed up listening to him complain to me. He ate half the sandwich and drank half the coffee but wouldn't eat the muffin.
The registrar had been up to see him and told him he could not go home until Bertie worked and it seems like he has gone on strike. I can understand that they need to know there is no blockage before he goes home but he is not happy.
I left and said I would come back with some dinner for him and he said he fancied fish fingers.
I spent the afternoon cutting down the dead agapanthus of which we have many and they are very tall. I also remembered to pick the courgettes before they got to marrow size. The yellow plant is producing lots but the green plant is not doing well at all.
I watched a TV programme and then got some food prepared for Jon salad and fish fingers and a fruit and custard tart.
He was looking more bored than ever and had spent the afternoon listening to music on his iPod and watching The Office on his iPad.
He enjoyed his dinner and ate it all. I think a steak and a glass of red might be on the menu tomorrow and see if that will get Bertie moving!
The nurse came to do his obs and told him his pulse was slow and his oxygen levels were low and he needed to take some deep breaths and not just chest breath. He started to breath but was panting more than taking deep breaths and she told him to slow down and breath deep. He was really rude to her and told her he couldn't do it to order! I was very embarrassed as all he had to do was breath. I told him to breath in through his nose and out through his mouth as normal and I got my head bitten off, too. She finally gave up with him as it went up a little. She told him to walk about a bit more as that would help. I am glad I am not a nurse!!!
I left soon after that and came home to water all the plants and then answer an email from my sister and before I knew it was 8.00 and still not had any dinner.
I cooked a piece of tuna I had and made a salad and had a well deserved glass of wine!!
I watched some TV but fell asleep so when I woke I went straight to bed and didn't do my blog!!!
