Friday Back to Red Cross

It was nice to get up and get ready to go to the shop today and see Les and Sharon. It was really busy there this morning with people buying lots of blankets and duvets but we managed to catch up on what has been going on and they liked the wedding photos.

A lady came into the shop and asked if we sold gas heaters and we told her we didn't. As she was leaving I asked her if she would mind going to Hairini as we had one to sell and she said that would be fine. I rang Jon and we decided on a price which she agreed and I gave her our address.

She went to our house and picked it up and took Jon's email address and said she would email us and if we have anything else to sell she might be interested.

I left the shop at 2.00 and came home and had some of the pumpkin soup I made yesterday.

I took Totty for a walk and it was really nice out. Jon has a cold and is not a happy man!!

I felt really tired after being on my feet all morning and had a little sleep in the afternoon!!

Jon went out for fish and chips and when he brought it back the paper was soaked with oil and the fish and chips very greasy. I took the batter off and just ate the fish. No pudding tonight as I had forgotten we had used up all the ice cream before we went away and I didn't want to buy anymore -oops!

Thursday

We slept very well for a first night back and even managed a lie in but it was very, very cold and we had a frost!

After breakfast I hung out the washing and did a few things around the house and put things away after out trip.

We went up to the garden centre for coffee and it was by now really warm and so we sat outside.

Jon had seen a terracotta warrior ornament in the garden centre a few weeks back and liked it. He wanted to know if I liked it as he wanted to buy it. We decided to get it as it will make a good talking point/focal point in the garden and remind us of our visit to China. It is about a metre tall and we need to think of a name for him. He is out on the deck at the moment and I keep thinking it is someone standing there.

After lunch we went to a shop to buy some curtains for our bedroom as the ones we put up there from the lounge are now needed back downstairs to keep the draught out at night.

I found some already with metal eyelets in the tops and you buy it by the metre. It was a good deal and reduced from $50 a metre to $12. They only had 6 metres so I cut it into three even pieces and although they don't look great, as there is only one curtain per window, they keep the light out and I can probably use them back in UK.

We then went to buy some wood to put the wall panel heater on. We don't want to attach it to the wall and make holes so Jon built a little frame for it and it stands in the bedroom and now works very well.

We sorted out the clock on the heat pump and it is really nice and cosy and heats up the rooms downstairs very well not sure what the cost will be but we can't be cold again like last winter. We also have the gas fire to use in the lounge and that looks and works fine. The gas man said it would eat the gas but the gas is a lot cheaper than logs that we had to buy last winter and I don't have to light a fire!

We had dinner and watched Coronation Street and then went to bed and felt warm for the first time in winter!!

WEATHER
Cold but sunny

Tuesday in Bangkok - Wednesday NZ

We woke at 6.45 and went down for breakfast at 7.15.

The guide arrived as we were having breakfast at 7.30 - he wasn't due till 8.00. He told me to change into something with sleeves and I told him I had a shawl to wear. He wasn't happy but I didn't have anything I could get out of the case. Jon had to put long trousers on and was not happy.

We went back to our room and collected our things and went to meet the guide. I just knew I was not going to like this 'man' as he was very abrupt and not your typical Thai person and his voice!!! All one tone and just like a gay man. It was going to be a long day!

We set off and he started to talk and he talked and he talked about politics in Thailand and about all the kings and apart from the fact he was hard to understand I really didn't want to know the history of Thailand in a few hours!

With the crazy traffic here in Bangkok it took us over an hour to get to the Royal Palace. As we went in I put my shawl on and one of the guards said it was not enough and I had to wear one of the free shirts they hire out. Really silly as there were many Thai women with shawls on like mine and were allowed through.

Jon needed to give Bertie some attention so I went to wait in the queue. The guide did not tell me I needed to pay a 200bht deposit and Jon had all the money with him. The guide only had a 1000bht note and they don't give change so I had to leave that. I was given a shirt to wear and I was very hot.

We waited for Jon to come out of the loo and I explained to the guide what he had just in case we needed another loo.

We went into the palace and he steered us to a corner and then he talked and talked and I have no idea what he said as it was just too hot to listen to all that history, general facts I can cope with but dates and King Rama 1, 2, 3 - 9 was just too much. Jon was dripping and unusually for me, so was I. Eventually we eased him to the door and we were finally able to get a look at the beautiful palace.

There are lots of parts that photos are not allowed and they are strict. We saw one Asian man use his phone and it was snatched out of his hand quick as a flash and he was told to get out! I can't remember all the palace rooms we went into until I check on my photos and the guide book but it was a lot and it was all very beautiful.

From the palace he said we would have an early lunch, it was only 12.00 and we had missed coffee!

He took us down a street near the palace and we went into a very seedy looking place which really didn't smell pleasant! I told him we didn't want spicy as Jon could not eat it and he went ahead and ordered our food. Now I am not opposed to eating in typical Thai bars but we had paid a lot of money to do this tour and I think they could have done better. Jon could hardly eat any and none of it was particularly good. For non spicy food it seemed to have lots of chillies floating around in it. So all in all we left having not eaten much.

He walked us through the street and a market which was very interesting and then down some very suspicious back streets and we came out at one of the river piers and there we waited for our long tail boat. The river was soooo dirty and if you fell in I am sure you would get very sick.

Our boat came and getting on board was very scary as it bounces. The ride was good and we were taken across to the other side of the river and then entered the canals. We saw some lovely places that would have been nice to eat at instead of where we went. Never mind. We also saw some really run down houses that back onto the canals and so much rubbish floating around. Some of the houses, mostly wooden, were falling down but still lived in. We saw young boys swimming in the river and I am sure if thy don't die of infection they will be killed by the engines of the long boats which look like lorry engines with a huge shaft propeller on the end of a long pole in the water! Some of the houses, which are all made from wood, are falling into the water and abandoned. The washing, due to lack of space, is all hung on coat hangers and then onto poles on the balconies. I would be very nervous hanging out my washing as I usually drop some on the floor but if they did that it would be last forever!

After a long journey through the canals we came back out onto the river which is very busy. We then went down to the Royal Barge Museum and I really loved seeing this. The barges are huge and very beautiful. The Royal Family, which everyone loves, has 75 barges and they come out onto the river for a royal procession once a year and it takes four and a half hours for it to pass. Our guide was now very informative and I liked him - just a little!

We bought a bottle of water from a little shop on the river. The owner of the shop had a bird in a cage which was so loud and obviously speaking Thai as they all laughed at him. Shame the cage was so small.

Back on our boat, I am getting the hang of boarding now, we crossed the river to a huge river cruise ship. Our guide told us they serve lunch to tourists on it but they are mostly Chinese and very noisy, I don't think he has much time for Chinese tourists and I do understand why! However, we had to disembark from our boat via this big boat with the help of some very nice young Thai men!

We walked through the boat to get out onto the landing pier and I really wish we had taken our chance with the noisy Chinese as it all looked very nice!

Our car was waiting for us and it was a relief to get into the cool car and be given cold towels to refresh ourselves.

We were due to visit some factory shops, silk, jade, silver etc. but we have seen all of them so I told him, and I feel bad I can't remember his name, that we would go back to the hotel.

I was glad we did as the traffic was just as bad going back but we had plenty of time. The motorway on the opposite side was closed as a very important person was coming through from the airport. We saw the motorcade and it turned out to be one of the royal family. I don't think Brits would be impressed if the M25 was closed to let one of our royal family through!

We had also seen a couple of cars with escorts through the city. The guide said they would be minsters 'tying to get to the office on time'! I have never seen so many cars and they encourage ONE to a car only and give big incentives to buying new cars. Seems like I must have taken some of what the guide told us on board !

It was lovely to get back to the cool hotel and our room was lovely and chilly! Jon was hungry so we went down for a cup of tea which was really nice (I have had problems with tea on this trip) Jon had a sandwich and I had a nice piece of cake which I really did not need and I am going to have to do something about the extra pound when we get back.

We both had showers and finished packing and went to checkout and get the shuttle to the airport - 5 minutes!

Check in was quick and we went to spend our last 500bht as we won't be back for a while.

We waited in the lounge and it was good to have Internet to catch up.

Our flight was called and we went to the gate but there was no plane there! We were taken by bus to the plane and had to walk up steps - a long time since we did that. I think the airport was busy and they had no free gates when our plane came in!

The flight was good and very smooth. The food was good and I finished my dinner with a coffee and a Gran Mariner and then finished watching the film Waitress which was OK.

I then settled down to sleep but didn't manage to sleep as well as the London leg but I did get a good few hours.
WEATHER
Hot and sunny 35 degrees

Wednesday

Woke up with hot towels being handed out which are always welcome. We then had a lovely breakfast with some beautifully cut fruit, croissants, yogurt and then some ham and I now feel stuffed!

Just preparing for landing and then the drive home. Not so exciting this time as we know we only have a few weeks left in NZ.

We had a lovely approach and landing and it was so clear, shame I didn't have my camera and I couldn't turn my iPad on.

We landed at 11.05 and were out and driving away from the airport by 11.30. It as a lovely day but cold.

We stopped for lunch and I had a toasted sandwich which was horrible and I didn't eat it.

We stopped at the supermarket on the way back to buy some dinner.

Once home to a cold house we unpacked and I put some washing on.

NZ is going through a particularly cold snap at the moment with lots of snow on the Desert Road which is unusual for this time of year.

The house next door had been rented and they trashed the place but that was before we moved in and so the house has been empty. I am not sure if it is going to be rented again or sold but they have been doing a lot of work on it. They have also cut down all the threes and shrubs down our side which opens it up a lot by my washing line which is now in the sun for the first time. It's not really a problem as we get more of a view from 'the garage door at the back'/ However, if the new people have a dog it might be an issue as there is not much of a fence, only a mesh one we put up. Fingers crossed there is no dog!

We went to collect Totty and she was fine and they had given her a bath as promised and didn't charge us which was just as well as it cost $500 for her to stay there. I think we are their best customers but Totty was happy though a little thinner (no treats) so she looks well.

Back home we put the hear pump on - luxury to have it and is the first one we have had in any of our houses. I miss the fire but at least this is instant heat. We also put the gas fire on so hopefully we will be warmer in this house.

I cooked dinner and we caught up with some Coronation Street though we might just as well forget all about it as we will be so far behind when we get back to UK.

Sunday Leaving UK

Woke normal time and finished packing. I took all the sheets off the bed and washed them.

I had not had a reply from the taxi driver so I rang him and he said he had not received my email, just as well he was free to take us this afternoon!

I went across to see Rene as she had a choose and book appointment to make and I said I would do it. However, when I got there she said she didn't want the appointment which was for her circulation which is bad in her hands. She said they have been like that for years and as she will be ninety this year there is not much point doing anything about them. I said my goodbyes to her and told he I will be back soon.

Jon had a text from Jane telling us they could not get seats together and were both in middle seats rows apart. We feel so sorry for her, things have not gone well for this trip! I hope they can get it sorted for the return trip.

Heather took Jon and I out for coffee to Costa Coffee.

I rang my sister to get the number for my nephew in Haverhill so I could pop down and see the new baby. Joyce told me that Barbara was not well and had gone back to the hospital. She emailed me later to tell me Barbara had a urine infection so is on more medication to clear it. I was glad to get the email just before we boarded our flight.

Heather and I went to Haverhill and the baby is sooo tiny! I had forgotten how tiny they are and she is only five days old. We both had lovely cuddles with her and she slept all the time. What a story they have to tell with such a quick, unplanned home delivery by 'dad'. So glad it all went well for them.

We got back to Newmarket at 3.00 and I finished packing and brought the washing in and put it all away for when we come back.

The taxi came at 4 .30 and we said our goodbyes - the bit I hate the most!

We had a good drive to the airport and made it in an hour and a half.

Check in was quick and we had a fast track pass for security which was very thorough. We were both body searched (Jon had to tell them he had a stoma very quickly as he didn't want to be prodded in the wrong place)  and the normal scanner. Once through the first one we were swabbed for drugs. The queues were long so we were happy we had a pass.

We went to the lounge and I had some lunch which was very good but I didn't feel like any champagne.

We went to the gate and we were selected again for another search of our bags!

We have had the same seats on every flight which is the upstairs bit of the jumbo.

The flight and food was really good a bit bumpy at times but we both managed to sleep for 'seven hours' which is amazing for us.

Monday
We arrived on time and to 32 degrees. Once checked in we went and sat by the pool and I had a swim.

We went and had a drink during 'happy hour' and I was very disappointed that the man was not singing in the bar that night. I was all ready to make a video of him!

We went to the restaurant and I had a nice Thai meal, red curry and Jon had a pizza. Such a shame he has to be careful.

We had an early night ready to our early start tomorrow.

Saturday

We all went out to the Pantry for breakfast which was very good even though they forgot to put the bacon on the plates! It is a small café/deli that opened last August and is doing so well they have extended into the next shop so had been closed for four days. It is doing really well and was very busy.

Jane left to go to have highlights put in her hair and Jon left to take the car back to Bury.

Heather drove me over to Bury to pick Jon up and then we went to Tesco and then to Curry's to buy a small TV which Heather can use but will eventually go in the family room.

Kirsty and James went to the beer festival in Bury.

Heather left to go to Wembley to see Muse and I went over to see Rene. She is getting very forgetful and repeats the same thing over and over poor old lady. She doesn't have much of a life as she can't get out on her own and when she is taken out to go to the doctors she can't walk far. No wonder she says she wants to die!

When I got back I had a phone call from Jane telling me she ha put the wrong date on the hotel booking form for Gatwick! She put Friday down and when she phoned them they told her they had no rooms so she lost her money £150 for dinner, bed and breakfast and parking! Fortunately, the parking will still be OK. Jon said he would pay for them at another hotel but we could only get one 14 miles away so they decided to stay home and get up early,  5.00, and drive on Sunday morning. I feel so bad for her.

Jon, Kirsty, James and I all went out to the Turkish restaurant  for dinner and we had a really lovely meal. I love Turkish food it was sooo good.

Bertie was  very busy once we got home but he was OK through the night.

WEATHER
Overcast but with some sun in the afternoon.

Friday

Jon was sick of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes and wanted to go out for breakfast so we went to the Pantry but it was not open yet after the refurbishment, it was due to open at 11.30 so we went to another one which was OK Jon had the full English and I had toast.

I went to buy a present for my nephew's baby but it was not nice walking around in the rain. We also picked up the wipes for Jon that we had ordered from Boots.

We went home and then took Kirsty to her office to pick up her car he left there yesterday. We then went to a garden centre for a coffee.

Jon and I went to Waitose to buy the things we need for our roast tonight.

We had lunch at home and then I made a chocolate cake for the girls and prepared the dinner and an apple crumble, Jon did the veg for me.

Jane and Jason came round after work and we all had a lovely dinner just like a Sunday roast/

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

Thursday

Heather had today off and we had decided to drive to Oxford as none of us had visited. We set off about 9.30 and Heather asked to stop at the BP on the A14 so that she could have some breakfast so we thought we would have an early coffee. The new Starbucks had opened the day before so we went in and had coffee and a sausage bap which was very nice.

We got back to the car and Jon said we would have to go home as Bertie had leaked. Unfortunately, the first turn off this road is at Quy near Cambridge so we had to drive all the way there and then all the way back to Newmarket.

Jon got himself sorted but it was by now very late and too late to drive to Oxford but we couldn't think what to do so I Googled things to do and came up with the Warner Studios and the Harry Potter set so off we went.

We drove through some heavy rain on the way and arrived about 1.30. The man on the gate asked to see our tickets and we said we didn't have any. He told us they don't sell at the door and he thought it was all booked. Heather told him she had checked on the website and there were spaces for 2.30 and 3.00. He allowed us to park up by the gate and Heather had to use her phone to book the tickets online, pay for them on a card and get an order number. We had to show the man the phone and he let us in and we parked the car.

We walked to the ticket office and showed them the phone and we got the tickets. How absolutely ridiculous!

We went in and had lunch and then went in to our tour. It is all very impressive the way it is done and we really enjoyed it and could have spent longer but we were going out for dinner and had to get back.

The drive home was slow as Jon went on the M25 and it was busy.

We got in, got changed and then Roger and Mary came to pick us up and take us to The Green Man which has a good reputation for steaks, for dinner. We had a lovely evening with Janet and Jim and Ian and Hilary.

The meal was good but I have had better steaks but it was lovely too meet up with old friends and we had a really good night.

Roger and Mary took us home and I said my goodbyes to them as we won't see them again before we leave.

WEATHER
Cloudy with heavy showers but sun in the afternoon/

Wednesday

Jon and I drove to Audley End and caught the train to London. We went to Leicester Square to buy theatre tickets and chose Singing in the Rain for the afternoon performance.

We went to the M&M store which is really big and is amazing to think they can make so much just from a little chocolate sweet.

We went for a very nice lunch to Café Rouge before walking along to the theatre. I stopped to buy a scarf as I was cold and it is always nice to have your neck warm and I had forgotten to bring mine with me. I bought a lovely pink scarf from a shop in Chinatown which was run by an Indian!! and it only cost two pounds!!

We went to the theatre and had an ice cream when we got in and we had really good seats. We both found the first half a bit boring and I was nodding off in parts but the second half was good and I particularly liked the way they had all the rain coming down, very clever.

Once out we walked to Trafalgar Square and had a look around before catching the underground back to Liverpool Street and only had five minutes to wait before our train left but the time had gone by so fast and when we looked it was nearly 7.30. I am not sure where the time went from leaving the theatre!

We finally got back about 9.00 and we bought some food from M&S at the station so just had to cook it. We both felt very tired though.

WEATHER
Overcast and cool with a clear sunny afternoon and evening.

Tuesday

Once again it is a blank so will fill in if/when I remember
I know James left to go away till Friday.

Monday

Due to not making notes like I usually do I can't really remember what we did on Monday!

Oh yes, I remember! We all went out for breakfast and as the Pantry was closed we went to what used to be the Clock Tower Café and where all the stable lads went for breakfast and it is now called Charlotte's and they do a pretty good breakfast.

Malcolm left to go back to Northchapel and we went home. Jane and Jason and Kirsty went off to do post wedding things like taking suits back etc.

Jon, Heather and I went home and Heather spent the day working on her course work which was due in this week.

In the evening Heather left for her class and later we all went to Wildwood and she came on after her class. We had a nice evening but I didn't make a good choice so was not impressed with my food but Jon had some good snapper.

We all went home to bed - work for everyone tomorrow.

WEATHER
Cold and overcast 12 degrees

Sunday

Not a bad night apart from the annoying cough which even Jane heard as they were in the room above us!

We all went down to breakfast about 30 of us and had a very nice morning and the sun was shinning what a pity it was a day late!

Heather left to go to the christening of her friend's baby as she is godmother.

After breakfast we all said our goodbyes to everyone going to Cornwall and back up North and we packed the car and went home to get ready for the bbq. We stopped off at Waitrose to buy rolls for the sausages and a few other bits.

When we got home Sami, Heather's friend was at home and also Malcolm so we all went out for a coffee.

The lady that I had ordered the food from came just before 2.00 and it was all OK, pretty basic but not bad and hopefully, thanks to Anne and Kay, with the lovely pasties from Cornwall and the sausages it would be enough.

Heather came home and said the christening was good but she wanted to be back home before Sami left to go back to Stoke which she did but not till later.

People started to arrive with four more than I had known about so I was a bit worried about food but it was fine we had enough. James had bought jumbo sausages and I had bought little rolls!

We were very lucky as it was a lovely day, sunny and warm and we were able to sit in the garden.

People gradually left and it got cooler and we lit the chimena and sat outside till very late. James' family were the last to leave about 11.00 or so and then it was bedtime.

Jane's Wedding Day

We were all up early, well most of us were. Jane left very early to have her hair done, 7.30!

I went to the hairdressers at 10.00 and left everyone at home getting ready in various ways. It was lovely to see my hairdresser again - four and half years since I saw her and she still gives me a lovely haircut!

Jon picked me up and we went home to pick up our things and go to the hotel. Jane had only just left as her hair had taken much longer so she was already running late.

It was chaotic at the hotel, too. Mark (cousin) and Sara let Jane use their room to get ready and Abi had already started on Jane when I arrived. The next couple of hours just flew by. The photographer was in and out of our room and in various parts of the hotel taking photos of anyone he could find then back to take photos of the dresses and flowers and so it went on. Abi did an amazing job on me and managed to disguise the horrible cold sores on my lips and I looked well.

Jon came over and I left to go to the wedding room it was all very busy in the hotel with lots of people around and it was lovely to see everyone dressed up, Jason's mum looked very nice.

We were called into the room and then Jane walked down the aisle and she looked lovely, the room looked very pretty with the theme of butterflies and the colour lilac.

The service was ve4ry nice but ve4ry short as civil weddings are but it all went very well.

We then went outside for the photos which took a long time and it was not very warm but I was the only one that really noticed it.

By the time the room was set up and the photos finished we were all very hungry and more than ready for our meal. The tables were lovely and the meal was very good. I had salmon followed by lamb and it was lovely. I had chosen sticky toffee pudding but couldn't manage it as I was too full.

The speeches were good and the best man was a star and made us all laugh a lot.

We all then went out to the bar and dance area and sat and talked and it was soon time for the evening guests to arrive, the first dance and cut the cake all went well and she had Especially for You for the first dance.

I was by this time feeling very cold and unfortunately, not in the mood to party. The buffet, I am told was good but I didn't feel like eating. The chocolate fountain looked amazing but I was not in the mood for that either. Such a shame for me to feel rough as I just didn't make the most of the day and it was all lovely.

We all went off to bed around midnight and we had a lovely room and it didn't take long to get to sleep.

We'd & Thur

Woke up feeling much better today.

Jon Kirsty and I went into town and had a coffee. I was due to have my nails done but Abie called to say her car had broken down but she had contacted her fiend who old come and o them but not till 3.00 so all three of us went into Bury St Edmunds to have a look around. It is the first time I have seen the 'new' shopping centre which is now four years old!

We went for lunch to a pub which was very nice.

When I got home I went down to see one of the neighbours to ask abou Rene and I found out he is staying at her sisters till Saurday so I will give her a call.

Stacey did my nails and they look very nice.

I went ou with Sonia for dinner at the Bedford Lodge and we had a nice meal and a long cht before she took me home. My nose started to run and my eyes were watering so looks like I now have a cold!

Thursday

Woke this morning and my nose and eyes are streaming. My nose is red so poor Abie will have her work cut out tying to make me look 'normal' on Saturday.

We got ready, Jon, Kirsty and I and set off for Sandringham. We had a really lovely day and the house is beautiful and I was really glad we went.

We had a lovely lunch there.

We set off as Kirsty had some houses to view later.

We stopped in Prickwillow as she had seen some there. I had said she should forget it as it was not a very nice place and too far out. Fortunately, the trip out there mader her realise it, too.

We got back and Jon went into Cambridge to pick up his suit which now fits fine.

I did a bit of cleaning then Heather came home and then her friend Sami arrived, they went out to dinner and gave Jon a lift to met his friends he was going out to dinner with.

Kirsty and James came home and really liked one of the houses but as thy haven't got the mortgage sorted yet they can't do anything about it,

Kirsty cooked a nice dinner for James and I.

Really, really fed up with all this virus now. I look a mess!

WEATHER
Cold, cloudy with some sunny spells. 10 degrees
Thursday
Sunny and warmer 13 degrees

Friday

I got up early to do my ironing and thought I would check the bridesmaids dresses. Goo job I di as the dressmaker said she would press them and didn't, it took me over an our and a half to do them and I found a pin in Heathers and had to try and ease it out through the seem. But they look good now, so glad I checked today!

So Kirsty and I were late going to Cambridge and a live mouse running round the living room made us later!

I found some nice shoes that fit. I think I will have to spend the rest of my life wearing peep toes and sling backs as they are the only shoes that fit and my boots!

Kirsty found some ice shoes and I found some ballet pumps to replace the ones I broke.

We went to Debenhams and I bought some body underwear and a nice dress and cardigan for Sunday.

We had a nice coffee and I bought some medication from Boots to try and rid myself of this runny nose.

We stopped by at Mary's to get some sand to weigh down some bags that are to have candles in for the reception.

We got home and Heather's friend was there with her baby who is very cute.

I did all my ironing in the afternoon before getting ready to meet the family and Malcolm for dinner at Quy Mill.

We had a lovely evening and catch up with the family despite the long wait we had for dinner.

We got home and sorted out the bed for Jane as she was on the bed settee. She texted Kirsty once we were all in bed to say the mouse had appeared and Kirsty had to come down and get it. She managed to keep it away from the cat and put it outside so hopefully it survived,

WEATHER
Overcast and cold

Tuesday, 14 May 2013

Tuesday

I woke at 4.30 this morning, Jon was snoring and I was coughing and I could not get back to sleep. I hope this goes away by Saturday.

I am feeling so cold here and I haven't really packed many warm thing to wear. I am like a granny when I sit down as I have a fleece blanket over my knees. It doesn't help hearing from people back in NZ saying how lovely the weather is there for the time of year! I think it might just be me though as Jon is not feeling the cold but neither has he been wearing his shorts!

We went out for a coffee with Kirsty this morning and then into M&S and Jon bought some jeans and I bought some warm tops. I tried to buy a long sleeved nightdress but couldn't find one as, of course, it is summer! Then to Boots for a few bits and then home and that was as much as I could do.

Jon made the lunch today and later he went for a suit fitting and none of it fitted so they have to get another in and it won't be here tillSaturday, all his padding he has to wear. He also went looking for a car for August.

Kirsty went to collect the dresses and it has been raining since so she can't get them into the house! Things are not going well.

I cooked dinner for Jon, Kirsty and I as Heather was still at work.

I have been trying to order food for Sunday but M&S don't deliver on Sunday so Kirsty has found a caterer just up the road from here and I will give them a call tomorrow failing that I will just have to go and buy things on Sunday morning. I wish I could feel more enthusiasm, maybe all the travelling has caught up.

I need to go o bed now.

WEATHER
Woke to sun for the first time

Monday

I woke at 6.30 after a very bad night and my whole body has ached overnight and I had some pretty, horrid, vivid dreams. I have a horrible cough and a really tight chest. I never get ill in NZ!

Not really in the mood to do much and I don't think I should spread around what I have and hope Jon does no get it.

Jon and I went down to the building society and paid off the mortgage which is a very nice feeling. We had a coffee and I bought some socks!

I did lots and lots of washing this morning for the girls, I don't know why they let it build up and then drying   is an issue and the place looks like a Chinese laundry!

I spoke to my sister and she told me that Barbara is improving but it will take six weeks. I just hope she will manage hen she gets home on her own.

Our bed was due to be delivered today between 1.00 - 4.30. It finally arrived at 5.40 what a waste of an afternoon. I put all the new covers on and it looks nice but very big in that small room.

I rang my elderly neighbour but there is no reply and I haven't seen any movement over there since we arrived and I did not want to pass on whatever I have so I didn't go over. I will have to go and ask one of the neighbours who checks in on her to find out where he is.

Jane and Jason came over for dinner as Jane and Kirsty were dying each others hair tonight. I made spaghetti bolganaise but forgot Jane didn't like it so she had a bit of a hissy fit and I ended up making her a tomato sauce - I must say I don't miss the cooking of various meals every night!

I was still feeling rough and Jon has started to sniff!!! So we had an early night.

WEATHER
cloudy with a few sunny spells 10 degrees

Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

I couldn't write more on the previous post so will continue here.

On the whole the flight was good, a bit bumpy over  Afghanistan but nothing much. The food was all very goo but far too much when you are just sitting don nothing but watching TV. I watched Les Miserables again and as all the lights were out I could cry as much as I wanted and I did, what a lovely film.

We arrived on time and got to the gate at 7.05 and as there were no queues at immigration we got through very quickly and were standing looking for our taxi at 7.20! He arrived after about 20 minutes as he had got stuck in traffic.

We got home about &9.45 I think so not bad.

Lovely to see the girls but as it was late Jane and Jason were not there. We stayed up far too late chatting.

We were sleeping in Heather's room till our bed arrives on Monday so it was all a bi messy and not being able to find things but it will do for now.

SATURDAY
Jane, Kirsty, Heather and I went for the final dress fitting and she looks lovely. Jason took Jon to pick up our hire car - a mini! A toy for Jon to play with!

After the fitting Heather and I went shopping to Cambridge and then to buy bedding for our bed. We got home to find the hairdresser sitting outside the house waiting to colour Heather's hair.

Jon came back and we went supermarket shopping. I find the UK supermarkets overwhelming, too much choice compared to what we get in NZ.

We all had dinner at home and J & J came over and we drank too much. James was leaving for a trip to Poland and Kirsty and I were still up when he left at 2.30!

I was putting washing in the machine at 3.30 when Heather came in, she thought I had gone mad!

SUNDAY
I woke at 8.00 and felt like death, why did I do it?

We had to get ready for the hen do so I just got stuck in and got on with my stupidity!

It was a lovely afternoon but Kirsty and I were a little subdued and I could not eat much and the thought of a drink - ugh! I did enjoy cuddles with my friend's four month old granddaughter and her two and a half year old sister. I just hope I haven't passed anything nasty on to them.

Once everyone had left we cleared up and Jon came back from watching the Grand Prix at Jane's

Jason came round after work and we all watched TV and they ate leftovers. I was so cold Heather gave me slippers, socks and a blanket. I started to cough and my grot felt bad and I was beginning to think this was a little more than a hangover.

Jon and I had an early night.

Bugger just lost all my typing including all of Monday so I think I will start a new post blog spot obviously dislikes long posts!

WEATHER
Cold, showers 10 degrees max!

Thursday

We woke early, before 7.00 and decided to have an early breakfast and avoid the large party that came in yesterday. However, they had left at 7.00 for an excursion and at time of writing this 17 34 are still not back!

We were due to go to the temple on the mountain this afternoon after our 12.00 checkout but changed our minds as we thought it might be too hot later. We asked for a later checkout which we got till 2.00 and then changed the car to 9.00. As we had been awake so early 9.00 seemed like lunchtime!

I had packed last night so not  much to do and we left

The road to the temple was very windy and one side had potholes so cars were driving on the side that didn't all a bit hairy but our driver was good and the car was cold!

At the temple there are 309 steps to walk up or you can go on a little train/lift which most people do. At the top it is very impressive with views, if it was clear enough of Chang Mai however, it is the most touristy temp,e we have been to and Thai people come from all over to visit.

The taxi driver gave us his card and said call him when we were ready but we said we had no phone. So he said OK be back here at 11.00 but we had no watches with us so we would have to ask someone !

We walked round and took photos, Jon is amused every time he sees a monk with a mobile phone!

Something I forgot to mention in my blog the other day was we saw a guy riding his elephant along the road and chatting on his mobile. We were just not quick enough to get a photo.

We had a coffee and then set off to walk down the 309 steps

Half way down stood a little girl, no more than four and all dressed in traditional costume. I went over to her for Jon to take a photo and she put a flower into my hand and put her arms around me. Aww how sweet I thought as Jon took the photo. She then said 'hello money' lol! We gave her some and she said Thank you.. They start them young here!

We got down to the bottom and there re so many stalls it is unbelievable and lots of dogs.

We were very relieved to get into our waiting, cold taxi and get back to the hotel.

Jon stayed in the room and read and I had an hour by the pool before we showered and packed and had to check out.

We went to the restaurant and had a nice lunch. Mine was a chef speciality salad with vegetables, chicken, crispy onions and cashews and was really good but spicy.

We now had three hours to wait and so headed for reception. The lady who organises excursions from the hotel also has Thai craft sessions in the afternoon and she asked me if I wanted to help make a flower garland so I said yes. It took me over an hour and is really pretty made with tiny jasmine buds threaded on a needle and then pushed onto a thread, joined in the middle and rose tassels added to the end. They are made as offerings to the Buddhas or given to important people. She said it was for me to take. I am not sure if I will get it home before it dies but it is very nice.

I then sat with Jon and we melted and I did my blog until the car came to take us to the airport.

We checked in and waited in the lounge. I am glad the storm has passed and it all looks clear or our one hour flight.

Hopefully I will get this finished later tonight.

It has kaken me till today, Tuesday to get back to my blog.

Our flight was very good and a much bigger and newer plane than we flew up on. They served a meal which seems silly for a one hour flight, a sandwich or a cup of tea and a biscuit would be enough, we didn't have the meal.

When we landed we got through quickly and went to find the Novotel and discovered that although it is just across the road and you can see it, you hav to go on a shuttle bus which takes you all ove the airport complex and ten minutes late you arrive. How can you build a modern airport hotel an not have access via a walkway. You can get to the car park via a walkway so why not the hotel?

We checked in and it was on of those places that you could have been anywhere in the world. The room was big and spacious and for one night was fine but expensive just because of where it is.

We had no free wi-fi which really annoys me with big hotels as the little places can do it so why not hem, just a way to get more money. Even a half our free would be useful. This is why I didn't get my blog finished.

We went down to the bar for a drink and we had the biggest laugh I have had for a long time. There was a little Thai man playing a double bass and a girl playing piano but the voice that came from him was so funny, a bit like Louis Armstrong in pain and I cried laughing but everyone else in the bar didn't seem to notice!

We then went or dinner but we only needed a snack after ou big lunch.

We went to bed late for us due to the late evening flight.

FRIDAY

I got up very early so that I could go and have a swim. It took me ten minutes to find the pool. They said second floor but the hotel is divided into two blocks so it took a lot of walking but was worth it when I got there. There were only three other guys there and it was a lovely pool.

I dripped back to our room and Jon was ready so I showered and got ready and we went down to breakfast which was OK but not the standard of the Tamarind Village that we have had for the last four days.

We had a bit of time to kill so wandered around the market stalls they had in the hotel foyer.

Back in our room we finished packing and I put my flowers garland, which had spent the night in he fridge, in my case as I thought it would be colder.

We got the shuttle to the airport and checked in. Thai airways have seats at their Business check in would you believe!

We went through security and as Jon got his bag of liquids out a bottle of aftershave fell out and smashed on the floor - oops! They were very good about it and moved us to the other scanner, just as well it was only us there at the time. I am sure they will smell nice for a fe days to come!

We waited in the lounge which was very big and they had some lovely food but we wer not hungry.

Our flight was called and it was a very long walk to the gate. The plane was a jumbo instead of the Airbus and our seats were upstairs and nearly at the front with big TV s teens in the seat backs in front.

Tuesday part 2

The bog wouldn't let me type anymore so I have had to start a new post.

We got to a snack post and I was given three huge sugar canes to hold which although I had to hang on to them did give me more balance but once I had fed them to Bang along the way I was back to the same.

We came to a road which we crossed and it felt very odd riding an elephant on a main road! It didn't help when he wanted to cross to the other side and his trainer was chatting to the trainer behind! A scream from me soon brought him back and I was told 'no madam, make him go this way. Lol I have no idea how to make him go left or right!

It was at this point that Jon went past on the back of a motor bike with a smile on his face so I knew he must be OK.

A little further on we stopped and all got off. I could hardly walk and must have looked like Old Mother Riley. They gave us all a bottle of water and we all agreed it was much harder than we though and I was dripping with sweat.

We walked them down the road for quite a long way and it was nice to walk alongside an elephant chatting to him and it was really sweet as he kept putting his head to me.

We arrived at the river and Jon was there waiting. He said he just could not do anymore and Bertie had filled with wind and he was very uncomfortable. I think I overestimated his recovery.

We walked down to the river and the elephants went in and we went after them, so glad I had my reef shoes. One did a poo as soon as it got in and there was a lady there scooping them out of the water! Hmmm, really hygienic this.

iWeb were then driven to another farm to see a four month old baby weighing 100kg. It was so sweet and very naughty and tried to take Jon's glasses off. He likes standing on people's feet but when the trainer did it to him he got cross. The mother, who was huge, was there and happy to let us play with her baby. The mother had the most beautiful face and eyes and looked like she understood every word it was totally magical but a storm was brewing, with thunder, lightening, black skies and suddenly windy so we had to get in the cars.

We were then taken to get our photo cd which was included in the price, I can't wait to see them!

We were then driven back to Chang Mai where the streets were flooded after the storm but we had managed to miss it. We were very very sore after an amazing day.

We got to our room and showered to get rid of he elephant mess and I sent a bag of very dirty, wet clothes to the laundry.

We just went down the road for dinner and had a really good pizza and salad before going back for another early night.

What an amazing day and I wouldn't have missed it for the world even though I am sore from head to toe!

I had heard from my nephew that my sister had been taken into hospital and had surgery for a perforated ulcer on her small intestine and from what I gather and know about the condition it is very serious. Fortunately, she does not need a stoma but had had 8 inches of intestine removed and is in ITU. Fingers crossed she will be OK

Wednesday

We had an easy day today as Jon was feeling washed out so after breakfast we sat by the pool, me in the sun and Jon in the shade. I did keep going in the pool to cool down though.

At 11.00 we walked across the road and had an iced coffee followed by a hot coffee, we have missed our coffee! We sat for a long time just watching the world go by, mostly in tuk tuks and on motor bikes. Then it was back to the pool for me but Jon went to enjoy the air con in the room.

We did go out to a cafe for lunch and I had pad Thai which was OK but I have had better. It was a really warm bar and we didn't stay long.

On the way back I went in to a massage shop to ask how much and I will go back later.

I stayed a while in the room to cool down then went for my massage.

It is an open fronted shop with cubicles like a hospital with curtains but they didn't close them. They had mattresses on the floor or chairs for reflexology massage. I was given a loose blouse to put on and some pants like we wore to ride the elephants. I was told to lie down and a young man came over and did my massage which was not at all relaxing and more like torture but afterwards it felt good and my aches and pains from the elephant ride disappeared. It cost 150bht which is about $6, £3 for an hour, amazing!

I got back to the room and we both got ready to go out. We negotiated with a tuk tuk driver to take us to a temple we wanted to see, wait for us and then take us to the night markets. Unfortunately, when we got to the temple it had just closed so we could only see outside which was very impressive.

We then went to the markets and had a stroll around, I wanted to buy an elephant and we finally found one made of buffalo horn which we liked. We then saw a fish therapy stand at 120bht for fifteen minutes, too good not to do.

First of all they washed my feet and then put a plaster on the remains of my blister as 'fish bite' she told me! I was led over to a bench and sat down and turned to put my feet in the tank and immediately lots of little fish began to nibble. It is a weird sensation, a bit like pins and needles and after a few minutes you get used to it and it is relaxing.

A group of very loud Canadians came along with two children. They had their feet washed and the little girl put her feet in and spent the next  15 minutes screaming and saying she liked it while the little lad would not put his feet in so dad started to threaten with no snacks etc ect but still he would not do it. The dad was a little put out that they would not let the mum do it instead but it was only 120 but the boy kept putting his feet in and splashing which upsets the fish and they stop nibbling so they lady kept telling him off. Jon suggested putting them both in the tank head first. Lol!

We had had enough by the end and it was hot so we headed out to find a tuk tuk. On the way we passed a stall selling T shirts with Hard Rock Cafe. Chang Mai. We asked him where it was and he told us Bangkok!! I think that might be illegal!

Our tuk tuk took us back and we went to a restaurant we had spotted earlier in the day and which had air conditioning. You might pay a bit more for the food but it is worth it and you enjoy it more.

I had a Thai green chicken curry which was lovely and Jon had a salad. He is keeping off the spicy stuff. It was all very good.

We went back to the hotel and to bed and for the first time ever I forgot to do my blog so I have had to do it today while waiting for the car to the airport and it is really hot sitting here!

Sunny and hot 37 degrees

Tuesday

We were up at six and I was glad I was in bed and asleep by 9.20 last night as I felt fit and ready to go.

We went down for breakfast and it was a lovely morning after overnight rain it was fresh and clean and the sun was out.

We were too early for anything cooked but there was still plenty of choice. I had my usual plate of fruit, Jon stayed off fruit as Bertie was a little iffy yesterday so he had toast, cheese and ham. We both followed this with some of the pastries and then we were fit to go.

We waited in reception for the car to collect us and were surprised when a very nice Range Rover arrived. We got in and set off to pick up two more people who turned out to be a lovely young Dutch couple who were really pleasant company.

We then drove up into the mountains through lovely countryside, and passed a few elephants along the way, to the farm and I am glad to sy our driver was very good. We arrived at the farm and turned off the road onto a dirt track which was very steep and narrow, so glad we had a good vehicle and driver.

Once out of the car and not an elephant about, we were shown to a little hut on stilts with open sides, shown were the toilets were and given a bottle of water and waited for the other people to arrive. This farm Patara only takes a few people a day so we had all booked before we left our own countries. The other couples were from UK and China.

We used the toilet which really was 'a room with a view' as it had a widow, well an opening with no glass and the view down the valley across the jungle  when you sat on the toilet was beautiful.

We were given a talk about the farm and elephants in Thailand which was very interesting and this particular farm has been very successful in breeding them. We were all given an over shirt to wear and as all the 'mahoots' wear them it helps to settle the elephants with new people. We were told the elephants were all happy this morning as they like rain and it had rained overnight.

We then walked up a very steep till to an open area where there were about 10 elephants roaming around and we met our elephants and their keepers. There was a young baby running around and she immediately came over to where we were on another raised, wooden hut and tried to take the bananas from the baskets and she was so cute.

We were all allocated to our elephants with a basket of bananas to feed them. My elephant was only six years old and not very big and he was called Bang, I can't remember the trainer's name but he was very good and took good care of me for the whole day, such respectful people here in Thailand.

We started by learning how to feed them and let me tell you putting your hand right into an elephants mouth is a bit scary! They close their mouth on your hand and it feels like your hand is in a vice. We were taught how to tell them to open their mouth, put a banana right in and then tell them well done. After one whole basket of bananas I had it sorted and still had my hand with all my fingers!

Next we gave them some bundles of grass which was more like green sticks. They eat constantly and so much.

Next we did a health check on them and I and my elephant were used for the demonstration. We had to check if they were muddy on their sides as this means they have been lying down to sleep at some

point through the night but they only a tally sleep for a total of four hours and not all at once as this puts too much pressure on their hearts and lungs.

Then we were told that they sweat from their eyes and that they are not, what most people think, crying, they also sweat between their toes.

Next we had to check their poo! Each elephant is chained at night to keep them in one place so that any droppings can be checked as it is very important to make sure they are healthy. I was taken over to Bang's sleeping area and had to count how many balls of droppings their were. Less than five is not good, Bang had done eight! I had to pick one up and take it over to the group and split it open and everyone had to have a sniff and it just smelt like grass which is good. It also had liquid in it and was well chewed so all in all a healthy elephant!

I was then given a bunch of grass to use like a brush and was told the words for lie down and Bang did and then I had to beat the hell out of him to get the dried mud from his back. We then were told how to lead them by the ear and say 'ma, ma' to make him walk and off we went to the elephant wash were I hosed him down and rubbed off the mud with my hands and I got soaked but it was great fun.

Bang then went back to her own little area to eat more grass and wait till all the elephants were washed while I took photos. Included in the day was an official photographer and a man with a video so taking our own photos was not important.

Once all the elephants were washed we were given a talk and demonstration on how to get up on the elephant and there are four different ways. The favourite way for Bang was by stepping on his right front heal  with my left foot while he lifted it off the ground. Then with my right leg I stepped onto his knee and hung onto his ear and literally hauled myself onto his head. Jon kindly took photos of this manoeuvre - not a pretty sight! Once up I was very glad I had been given such a small elephant as it was very high with only a rope to hold onto behind me, really kills your arm! You have to sit forward on his neck, with your knees tucked up behind the ears a bit like a jockey on a thoroughbred! It is really uncomfortable and I felt very insecure and hung on for dear life to Bangs mop of hair!

I didn't see Jon get up as I was too scared to turn around! We started to move and headed up a huge slope into the jungle. It was really hard work over very rough terrain. There were times when I thought I couldn't go on and my legs were shaking due to gripping the beast. Eventually, the trainer, who was walking along side suggested I put my legs in front of the ears hanging straight down and this was better, not a lot, but better.

All of this was made more difficult by the baby that came along with us. He was 14 months old and full of mischief and his mum was walking in front of me. He stopped to dig up roots, to scratch himself on a tree and generally block my elephant who kept knocking him with his trunk. If he got behind he would come dashing past pressing against Bang and my foot which in turn knocked me off balance!

We had a very long walk up and down hills when I thought I was going to land on the ground over his head and all the time the young trainer kept asking if I was OK and telling me I was doing well.
Unbeknown to me Jon had had to get off and was walking. I think he put too much effort into the first part and wore himself out but he said he was too uncomfortable to carry on so they made him a walking stick and he walked.

WEATHER
Hot and sunny with the usual afternoon storm 34 degrees

Monday

We both slept well and woke about 7.30. After a shower we went for breakfast which is down by the pool. Really good breakfast with lovely fresh frui - I am in heaven.

We went out to explore and find a couple of temples our guide had told us about last night. As we were walking along the road a you g Thai man, on holiday from Bangkok, started talking to us and telling us what we should go and see and he was so nice. As we ended our conversation he asked so wht are you going to see and we said we would take his advice and go and find a tuk tuk to see the temples. He very kindly called one over and told the driver all the places to take us and told him to wait and agreed the price of 100bht, $4, £2.50 and off we went.

We had an amazing morning. We went to a beautiful Silver Temple. I could not go in, men only, it was all made of silver, even the roof. We saw the monks in their workshop making all the silver panels.

We then went to another area where there are mant temples and once again I could not go in as I had forgotten to bring something to cover my shoulders. Jon said it was lovely to see everyone giving fruit offerings to the monks and they were then blessed.

We found out about a boat trip which we will go on. Back in our tuk tuk we then went to various craft places and saw silver being made, jade, silk, carpets. Parasols being made and painted and fans.

It was a really good morning and our driver was amazing. We got back to the hotel very hot, sticky and dusty.

We went into the restaurant and had a nice cold beer and some lunch.

We were about to get changed to sit by the pool but a thunder storm came over so back to the air con in our room.

The man we met this morning told us that a lot of monks would be in the temple near our hotel this evening for a special service and that we should go along so we did.

All the monks were there and they were chanting. Not sure what it was all about or for but it was very nice to see.

We then walked around and saw more temples. It is amazing how many there are and you walk into one and there is usually another behind that.

We then followed the leaflet given to by the hotel which is a wal around the area of the hotel and by the end of it I had seen enough temples to last a lifetime and our feet were sore.

Back to the lovely cool room and after a shower and change we went to dinner at the hotel restaurant. Jon was not very hungry and just had a salad and I had stir fry veg with chicken.

It was really good. I ate one chilli by mistake and left the others, about 15 pieces broken up, at the side!

Back to our room for an early night as we are being collected at 7.30 in the morning to go and play with elephants for the day, really excited.

WEATHER
Sunny and hot followed by mid afternoon storm 34degrees

Sunday in the air

We both slept well and came to the conclusion that for an airport hotel the Novotel is very quiet.

We had breakfast which was very good and then packed up. Jon took our overnight bag back to the car and brought th other two cases to the hotel and we crossed the road into the airport.

Check in was not open so we had half an hour to wait so we did some people watching.

We were pretty much first in the line and checked in and were 500grm under. As we only had an hour between landing and our next flight our bags were labelled 'hot transfer'!

We went through to the Koru Lounge and waited. We had a coffee and I used one of the computers and tried to sort out our photos from the South Island. They are on FB now but a little mixed up.

Our flight was called and we went down to the gate and boarded. So far Thai Airways are doing better than Malaysian did last year. The plane was nice and spacious with just two, two and two across.

We were late taking off due to the inflight entertainment system not working so they had to one the door again and let six engineers on to fix it but it made a 30 minute delay. We have a plane to catch! We have never done this before - connection flights - nerve wracking!

The flight was pretty good, all daylight till just before Bangkok. Our first meal, venison, was really good. I enjoyed the second which was rice, prawns and BBQ pork but that was not good for Jon as Bertie is a bit fussy!

I watched Quartet, I'll give it a year, Parental Guidance, which was very funny. I started the Hobbit but found the screen too dark so I gave up. I then watched Don't back down and enjoyed that. I also managed to fit in two episodes of Downton Abbey which we have recorded at home. So all in all very good with still lots to watch on the remaining 36 hours we still have!

Our flight landed half an hour late in fact we got off the plane at 9.02 leaving us 28 minutes to catch our flight!

As we walked through, we were nearly first off, a Thai Airways man was waiting with our names on a card and he hurried us over to a golf buggy and whizzed us through the terminal and to transfer immigration. Once through there we had our bags checked though not sure when we would have had time to add anthing to them!

The security man said don't worry plenty of time and only a 50 minute walk to the gate! Very nice people the Thai people! Our man from Thai was still with us and took us to the gate, it was 9.25 phew

The flight was an hour and we were feeling really tired now and just wanted our bed so the flight felt much longer.

We arrived in a shower of rain but very war. We were vey relieved to see our cases coming through on the carousel and were soon out in arrivals.

Unfortunately, no taxi waiting for us. Jon walked up to the domestic arrivals and he was there as the flight was coming fom Bangkok but we had to clear customs.

It only took 15 minutes to the hotel Nd he gave us a very welcome bottle of water.

First impressions of the hotel are good. It is in the centre of the old city in a very built up area but once in the grounds it is a little oasis with beautiful trees and plants. The rooms are built to be like an old village and we have concrete floors but it is lovely with all we need including dressing gowns, tea, coffee and bottles of water every day plus a lovely bowl of fruit even though I don't know what one of them is?

We unpacked what we needed and went to bed - thank heavens for air con.

WEATHER
Sunny start but raining by the time we took off. 29 degrees in Bangkok.

Saturday, 4 May 2013

Saturday and we are on the wy.

Saturday
Got up and ready and after breakfast we took Totty to kennels. I noticed when she was sitting on my lap that she had a lot of soil in her coat on her back. This usually happens when she is in kennels as she must roll in the grass. I felt really bad that I had not noticed it and brushed her - been too busy. I told Bill at the kennels and he said he would bath her - good luck with that!

We went for coffee on the way back and we had a downpour which is the forecast for today so not a good day for driving.

We got home and I started to pack which,  once I started, did not take so long and we managed to fit everything in plus a bit more and the booze!

I did a bit of cleaning  in between sorting out photos on Facebook. It appears they did upload even though it did't say so. The only way I found out is a friend I had tagged commented which made me look at the albums and I had six empty ones and one with photos so I am not sure what was going on. I managed to upload the second lot, too so they are on now but not published until I can write the descriptions which I will get done.

Jon made lunch and sorted out the rubbish and then it was time to go. I popped in next door to see David and Edwina to ask if they could get the post not that we get much but it is good as he keeps his eye on the place and they have our email.

We left and the sky looked very black and I thought we were in for a rough journey but we were very lucky. We did hit rain at the Bombay Hills about 4.30 and it went dark as night. Just as I thought we had got through it, and the really dark clouds had gone, the heavens opened and you could not see a thing and the lightening was incredible and most people drove very slowly but you always get a few idiots and today was no exception with a few cars flying past us at great speed.

We arrived at the airport hotel and Jon dropped me at the door with the cases and he went to park the car in the long term car park which is not far but as I had no coat and he did I got to stay in the dry!

I checked us in and eventually Jon came back.

We got to our room and had a cup of tea and watched the news.

We went across to the pub in the airport for dinner and had the always very good fish and chips followed by a McFlurry!

We went back to the hotel and got in the lift with a very tall lady who I recognised as one of the Silver Ferns. She didn't know how to use the lift (you need to swipe you room card on a panel to get to your floor) so we showed her and she thanked us and said have a good night. When she got out and we carried on Jon and I looked at each other and said 'isn't she, yes that's right'! It was Irene van Dyke.

Back to our room and we read and watched some TV. I had an email to confirm the taxi that will pick us up next Friday so all sorted now. A few emails from Heather about what we want for food when we get back.

I can't use my phone after tonight as I have not renewed my bundle which is due tomorrow but as I will not be here it is not worth it as roaming charges will cost too much. Hopefully I can get a SIM card for my phone in UK and I will at least have a phone.

Well it is bedtime now so an early night for us. Our flight leaves at 13.10 tomorrow so we will check in about 10.00 and go to the lounge to use their computer and I will relax as all the baggage will, hopefully, have gone through!

WEATHER
Sunny spells but some heavy showers 20 degrees.

Friday

It is very late and I have 15 minutes to type my blog before I turn into a pumpkin or should that be rags??

Whatever, it is very late and I should be in bed.

Once again I woke at 6.30, seems to be my time to wake up these days. I was up and ready and left for the shop on time for a change.

It was not a particularly busy morning. Bianca came in with Simone who is really cute now and very cheeky.

Les and I had a coffee at 11.00 and apart from that nothing much happened. I did fine a lovely skirt today which I am very pleased with.

I left saying my goodbyes for three weeks and went to the hairdresser. I had my eyebrows done first and then Dana did my hair. I told her we were leaving to go back to UK and she told me that she is going to live in the UK with her English husband. She will be down in Worthing which will be a bit far for me to go and have my hair done every six weeks but we will keep in touch.

I went home and had some lunch - toast as there is not much else in the fridge.

Jon had been out for a coffee with Lisa who he used to work with and he had got all his things sorted ready for me to pack.

I really do hate packing as I am always worried about the weight and how much we can fit in and if I am taking the right things or not.

Jon cooked dinner and I carried on sorting. The downstairs bedroom looks like a clothes shop now.

We don't need to leave till after lunch tomorrow so I will pack everything in the morning not much point in stressing before I have to.

Off to bed now.

Thursday

I logged on to the computer this morning and the first thing I saw was a post from my nephew's wife wishing her son a happy second birthday and I felt really bad as I had not sent a card. I thought it was because it was the beginning of the month and I had not turned the calendar over but when I checked it was not even on the calendar!! Note to self 'must do better next year'.

I had to leave early to get over to Bethlehem to have a pedicure and a manicure. I really enjoyed both and she did a good job.

I was going to meet Jon for coffee but when I called him he was still walking round the Mount so I went to Bayfair on my own as I had a few things to do.

First stop was to take my sunglasses back - again. The girl asked me to leave them with her and call back so I went for my first coffee since last Friday!!!! I then had a wander around the shops and bought two pairs of leggings to replace my worn out ones.

Back to get my glasses and they decided, in view of the fact this is the third repair, to replace them but needed to see my docket so I said I would bring it in later today or tomorrow.

I went home and Jon was not yet back. I waited ages and was so hungry I had my lunch. Eventually, he came home. He had taken his car in for a WOF (MOT) and they told him it would be an hour so he waited - nearly two hours!! Eventually, a man came out and told him they were just about to do his car and they had not realised he was waiting!!! They then gave him a courtesy car and he came home.

I made Jon's lunch and then said I would go and get my sunglasses sorted and left for Bayfair. I parked the car and had a funny feeling that I had not picked up the docket!! After searching my bag I realised I had left it by the phone. I quickly called Jon and he said he would bring it over to me as he was due to collect his car soon anyway - phew.

I eventually got my glasses changed and now have new ones.

I went home and Jon went off to buy a camera, he thinks he would like to dabble in photography.

I did some ironing when I got back and put the clean sheets on the bed so I am all up to date with housework and ready to go away well, the house is ready for me to go away. I still don't have clothes sorted. Very hard to work out what to take as it is hot in Thailand and cold in UK but hopefully it will get warmer!!

I baked some date scones and checked what I have in my larder and it is looking pretty empty as is the fridge and freezer.

Jon got back with his new toy so hopefully that will keep him occupied for a while. He went for coffee with a guy yesterday who works in the industry and he told Jon that nobody can understand why Mark has done what he has. Jon said that is the opinion of a lot of people but unfortunately none of them actually say it to Mark! I say let them get on with it now and the sooner we are out of here the better as it is too hard thinking about what they have done.

I cooked dinner and we then caught up with Coronation Street though not sure what the point is as we are 18 months behind and are never going to know what has gone on once we get back to UK.

I have been sorting out my makeup and soap bag etc. so hopefully tomorrow it will just be a matter of putting it all in the cases - 'just'!!

Off for an early night tonight as I have been so late recently trying to get photos on FB and it is still not playing the game and not sure why.

I am loving the new spellcheck on FB as you type and also on my blog so saves me having to do it before I post it.

Where is the time going!

I had to get up early this morning as I wanted to dye my hair and I was due to meet up with Bronwyn for a coffee so no time to hang around.

I managed to do my hair and get two loads of washing done and hung out before Bronwyn sent me a text to say she was home.

Jon was going to meet someone for coffee so I was not leaving him on his own!

I met at Bronwyn's house and she drove us down to the Mount and I had a fruit tea, still thinking of the wedding outfit, and she had a coffee and we had a long chat as we have not caught up for ages.

On our way back to the car we stopped by at the merino shop and I bought a really lovely jacket that I have promised myself before we leave and by the looks of the weather I will need it in UK!!

I got back and Jon was just home and we had lunch. I keep thinking there is something I have forgotten to do as it is all a bit relaxed now. Packing the cases will be the worst thing and I dread that. Jon spoke to Thai Air today and they have said we will be OK to be 5kg over so hopefully we will be fine.

I needed to go to the Red Cross to see one of the ladies about repairing a jacket and she only works on Wednesday so I went in there and left Jon doing my housework, bless him, he is so bored.

Sorted out my jacket and then went home and bought some bread on my way.

Once back I tried again to put some photos on FB but it is not playing the game today and I don't have the time to waste but would like to get them on before we leave so I am up to date.

I have also started trying to plan and book our flights for our trip to Oz which is more complicated than I thought. The extra cost to fly to Ayres Rock is ridiculous and so we are going to drive from Alice Springs. We will cut down on out time to Darwin as I think Ayres Rock will need more time.

I cooked a stir fry for dinner and then we watched some TV before I went on to the computer to do more planning.

Enough now, it is time for bed and nearly midnight again!!!
