Friday

Another beautiful day here, really warm and sunny just like a summer's day/

I had intended to get on with my housework and then spend the afternoon doing my knitting but a phone call from Rene put paid to that. She rang to ask me to come over and have a look at her foot. she has had a wound on the side of her foot since the really bad fall back in June. It heals up for a while then breaks out again. she told me yesterday and I wanted her to go to the doctor but she wouldn't. Anyway, overnight it had been hurting her so she asked me to look at it.

I went over and said she needed to go to the doctor so I rang to make an appointment. the system they have now, she is at the surgery where I used to work, is that you give the receptionist the details and a doctor or nurse calls you back to say if you need to be seen - crazy!

I waited with her for a while and then told her I would go home but to say yes to whatever time they gave her and I would take her down. She later called me to say they would see her at 12.15. She told me Marie was due to come this morning (Marie is 'the girl' who does for her) and she would take her. I rang the surgery to say we had been told we could use the doctors car park and they said that was fine.

I had to do some shopping so I went off to Tesco and then came home and had a coffee before going over for Rene. Marie had just arrived but Rene decided she wanted me to take her so we got her out and into the car which took about ten minutes.

I parked the car but it is still a long walk for an old lady who only walks around her house and progress was very slow and we made it in to the surgery at 12.20 after leaving the house at 11.45!

As we were getting out of the lift a lady with a buggy, a toddler and an older child were waiting to get in. We were very slow getting out and the toddler walked into the lift. The mother was so busy on her mobile texting didn't notice and then the doors closed. The mother then started to shout at the young lad saying he was stupid for not holding the door. Had she been watching her child instead of on her phone she would have noticed. By this time the child was screaming the place down. The young lad was not bothered and just said 'I'll go down and get her'. Just as well it is only one floor but it was enough to have the toddler in hysterics.

We checked in, and after saying lots of hellos to ladies I haven't seen since I got back, we walked to the waiting room and Rene said 'what are we doing here?'

We were called in and saw Denise one of the nurses who dressed her wound and told me to make an appointment for her to see the podiatrist at the Day Centre as they would deal with it better.

Off we go again on our slow walk back to the car and I decided to pop in to the Day Centre then rather than phone them or give her the chance to change her mind.

I made an appointment for her on Tuesday and got them to write it down and also put the cost down so that she knows. I will take her down and hopefully she will see it is a nice place and maybe agree to going down once or twice a week and maybe having her lunch there. We live in hope!

I got her back home but she was worn out poor old girl.

I got back and made our lunch and after lunch I finally got on with my housework.

The plumber came to service the boiler. He is a lovely lad and went to school with Heather and we had a good catch up while he worked.

Jon had been working in the office all morning and as it was so nice outside he went into the garden and cut the grass and did a bit more to the new borders.

I took Totty out but she was not in the mood for walking so it was short and sweet.

I finally managed to sit down and started to crochet a tiny had for my friends new granddaughter.

I coked smoked haddock with colcannon with a mustard sauce for dinner and it was very yummy.

Heather was over at Jane's for dinner tonight.

After dinner we watched TV and I finished the hat which is really tiny but very cute.

Thursday

Not such a nice day today but it is still very warm for the time of year.

I hung my washing out but I don't think it will dry as it is one of those days.

Jon spent all day in the office preparing some training courses he is going to give and I had another of those days that I don't know where the time goes and are becoming far too frequent and I need to get myself sorted and doing something.

I went over to see if Rene had all her heating sorted and Marie was just painting the airing cupboard for her. The tank has been removed and she is going to have a little heater put in there for her clothes.

Marie told me that the radiator in the living room had burst when the plumber was testing the new boiler. She said the pressure had built up and as it was an old radiator it made a huge bang and a big bulge and then the pipes started to leak all over the floor giving them both a terrible fright. The plumber had to fit a new radiator. She still has no idea how much it is all going to cost!

I took Totty out for her walk and she was a bit slow and stop start today but we managed to get round the block.

I went down into Newmarket this afternoon to a shop in the High Street that does upholstery. I showed them a photo of the chair Rene wants loose covers for and they quoted (I really must do something about the pound sign) GBP366 plus four meters of material at GBP25 a meter approx. I know it is a lovely old chair but I don't think it is worth that much.

I then went to buy a little baby gift for a friend who has just had a little girl and is not terribly well and the baby is very tiny.

When I got back I found the website of Plumbs upholsters and requested a home visit to see what they will charge.

Jon made a cuppa and then I brought my, still wet, washing in and had to put it on the maiden in the garage.

I cooked dinner a little later than normal as Heather went for a trial at a new gym and came back hot and sweaty.

Hopefully, the plumber will be here tomorrow to service our boiler. This will be the third time or maybe it is the fourth time he has made an appointment. If he doesn't turn up this time that is it, we will get someone else.

Wednesday -London

We were up and ready for our day in London though it wasn't an early start as we could not get a train till after 9.30 - off peak.

We drove down to Audley End and parked the car though it took sometime to sort out the parking ticket as we didn't have enough change and Jon had to register it on his mobile which, as it turned out, was a good thing as he thought it was seven pounds for the day but as it was off peak it was only three pounds sixty - he should have gone to Specsavers! Always read the small print!

A train was just pulling in as we got to the ticket office so we had to wait for the next one which had a change at Stansted onto the Stansted Express so it was very fast into London.

We went down to the underground and the station was crammed with people and children. I had forgotten it was half term when I booked the theatre!!!!!

We managed to squeeze into the train with our faces pressed to the door and nothing to hold on to although there was no chance of us falling over as the train was too full. When we arrived at our station everyone poured out onto the platform with the same idea as us - going to see the poppies!

We managed to get out of the station and into the street but when we got over to the pavement around the Tower moat it was at least eight deep and everyone shuffling around like penguins. We decided to give it a miss and go again next week.

We walked back to the station only to find it had been closed due to overcrowding and they advised us to go and get a train at Aldgate which was a ten minute walk but at least it was a way from the crowds.

We got a train much easier at Aldgate and made our way to Tottenham Court Road and the Dominion Theatre where we collected out tickets.

We then went into Café Rouge for lunch. I went to the loo and when I came back to my seat and put my hands on my bottom to smooth down my skirt and sit down there was no skirt there, it was tucked in my tights! I could have died! I managed to untangle it but I didn't dare look around as I didn't want to see who had seen my rear end. So glad I was wearing dark tights and not three quarter socks! At least I can laugh about it.

We had a good lunch and then we had a walk around the shops though there aren't that many around there.

We went into the theatre which has been refurbished and it looks very plush inside. We had good seats and no big people blocking our view and no pillars in this theatre either.

The show was amazing and had Marty Pellow playing Chen, he was OK but nothing special. However, Madalena Alberto, who played Evita, was spectacular. The scene where she is dying was heart breaking and I cried!! Such a shame it finishes this week and has only been on since September, I feel lucky we were able to see her playing the lead role.

We came out and straight into rush hour and slowly made our way back to Liverpool Street station to get the train home. We got on a surprisingly empty train as soon as we got to the station but it soon filled up. It only takes 50 minutes if you get on the right train but some stop at every station and take forever.

We got back and drove to Newmarket and as we were earlier than we thought and I had nothing out for our dinner we decided to stop by the pub and have dinner which was very good.

By the time I got home I was shattered. I don't know how people manage working in London and commuting every day, it's not much of a life!

Tuesday

Another beautiful day to wake up to and things were not so busy in the street. It was nice having a morning without builders, they seem to have been here forever.

On the minus side I have woken with a bit of a cold today, just what I need - not!

Jon went out to a meeting with some people about some work they want him to do so that is promising.

I went to Tesco and bought two types of cream, for Riley's nappy rash, as recommended by the young mums (and a dad) who commented on Jane's post on FB and with two Costa lattes I went over to Soham. Note to self 'when I take coffee to Jane in Soham go the long way round on the by pass avoiding the humps in the road'! Coffee spilt on my passenger seat!

Riley was in a happy mod as he had just had a bath and was due a feed. He then needed another nappy change, no wonder he gets a sore bottom! Jane put the new cream on as directed, a pea size amount, I think she will need to use a grain of rice size amount as it went a long way! He was then happy to lie on the floor, minus his nappy and seemed very content. I just hope his bottom improves and he does not have another bad evening.

I didn't stay long and I didn't hold Riley as I did not want to spread my germs.

I went to Tesco to do some shopping on my way home. I got back into the car and looked at the time and it was nearly 1.00 where had the morning gone?

I got to the clock tower and the clock said nearly 12.00 and I realised I have not changed the time in my car! Phew!

I put my shopping away and tidied the shelves in the garage and then did a few jobs around the house. I finally managed to do my nails as they were looking pretty bad.

We had ordered rail cards and they had arrived but as we were out they had gone back to the post office. We need them for tomorrow so I had to go down before 2.00 to collect them. Fortunately, I managed to park in the High Street so it didn't take long.

Jon came home and had had a good meeting with the promise of some work and he needs to do some training so will need to make a programme. He now has something to get his teeth into.

We had lunch and then I prepared tonight's dinner and then cleaned the bedrooms and Jon went into the garden.

I rang my friend, Mary, to ask if she can come over and let Totty out tomorrow afternoon as we are going to London and it is a long time for Totty to wait until Heather comes home for a wee. Hopefully, she won't disgrace herself and do one before Mary gets here.

The man came for the skip and was just putting the newt over it when the builder came round from next door and said are you sure it is the correct one as he was waiting for his to be collected and ours was not due to go until tomorrow or Thursday. He looked at his invoice and sure enough he had the wrong one so had to manoeuvre his big truck out of our drive and into next door!

We had a cup of tea and the rest of the clotted cream with a scone.

Heather went for a run after work so was late coming home but as soon as she did we had dinner and then watched some TV

Monday

What a beautiful day it was today, sunny and warm and not at all like the end of October! Long may it continue.

Heather had a hospital appointment this morning for a scan on the lump on her hand so was leaving late.

I took my car out of the drive as I needed to go to the doctor and had to go through this silly process of making the appointment on the day. I have to go and wait till they open as you cannot get through on the phone and once you do all the appointments for the day are gone.

It was very busy outside today as we had the builders van, our neighbour on the left had her builders in and the people to fit her new floor, the neighbour on the right is having new gutters and facia boards fitted and the plumber was across the road to fit Rene's new boiler. Centre Drive is not the best place to park on a good day but with all these tradesmen and the bin man and recycle man due it was chaos!

I got to the doctors and once they opened the door, I was second in, I heard her tell the lady in front that Dr Barclay was on leave! Last time she had changed her days!!!! The lady in front said she was happy to see a nurse practitioner but when it came to my turn I said I needed a doctor and got an appointment for 10.00. Second doctor now about the same tummy pain!

I went home and put my washing on and then went back at 10.00. I saw a very nice young doctor who has put me on stronger antacid medication. He also wants me to take in a 'poo' sample for H pylori  infection and is sending me for an urgent ultrasound on my abdomen and pelvic area - but that means in the next two weeks! He thinks it could still be gallstones despite the clear scan I had back in March or possibly an ulcer on the back wall of my stomach. I feel happier now that something is being done and he assured me there are no lumps in my tummy!

I went to reception for my prescription and as they only had one packet I said I would come and get the other packet when they were in stock.

Back home Heather rang to say that the lump on her hand, which the NHS doctor had said was a ganglion and she would remove it, is in fact bone! As it was so dense they could not get a clear picture and she now needs to have an x-ray for which she will need to get authorisation from BUPA. The doctor asked if she had had any trauma to the hand as that is how this usually occurs but she hasn't. He told her she had very interesting hands!!! Hmm, watch this space.

The builders had got on very well filling the gaps in the paving on the patio and it was looking very good.

Jon and I popped into town for a coffee and I wanted to have a look around the charity shops. Jon found a Bob the Builder mug and bought it for Ben who has done all the brickwork and paving, he was very pleased with it.

We got back and I had to dry all my sheets in the dryer today despite the beautiful weather as I could not get my washing line out due to it being on the wall on the patio.

We had lunch and then I decided to take my 'sample' down to the doctors and collect my other tablets.

When I arrived at the surgery the receptionist told me their samples only go once a day, in the mornings and asked if I would mind taking it to the hospital which was fine. I then asked for my prescription which was due to be there at 1.30 but was told it would not be there till 4.30!!!!!

Off to the hospital to drop off my droppings!!!!

Back home and the builders had finished and all the materials have been cleared up and they say the skip will be collected in the next couple of days. They will come and do the front porch when they have a spare half day. At least I can now get my car into the drive, I was walking halfway down the drive to park it all day!

I decided to take Totty out for a walk while the sun was still warm. She was reluctant but I managed to get her on a long walk but she has been shattered since I brought her back, Poor old girl.

I went over to see how Rene had got on and all of her little back room, where she spends all her time, was in chaos. The new boiler is in but it is high up on the wall and I really don't think she will like it if it starts making a noise. I am not sure why he has put it up so high but all the pipes will be exposed leading up to it and I think it is going to look pretty bad. I certainly wouldn't like a combi boiler in my living area. It is probably because the gas comes in there.

She did make me laugh as she said 'I will get this all done and then I will kick the bucket and leave it for somebody else'. Unfortunately, if she does 'kick the bucket' I should think whoever buys the house will demolish it and build a new bungalow as happened with the bungalow next door to her. At least there will be a new boiler!

I just hope she will be OK through the night and does not trip on anything when going to the bathroom.

When I got home Kirsty was there as she wanted me to hide James' Christmas present for her. She stayed a while for a chat and then Heather came home and Kirsty left.

I made dinner and then we watched some TV.

Jane had put on FB that Riley was very upset again tonight due to his nappy rash. She had lots of suggestions from friends and I said I could buy some cream and get it over to her first thing in the morning. Poor little boy, it looked so sore last night.

Off to bed now and another sunny day to look forward to tomorrow.

Sunny 19 degrees.

Sunday

I went to bed last night and couldn't sleep as I had a stomach ache not helped by Jon snoring so I got up again and made a cup of camomile tea. I finally went back to bed at 2.00. The extra hour was most welcome!

I have finally caught up with my ironing and have none left to do, until tomorrow when I wash again!

We didn't go out for coffee this morning which is how I got my ironing finished.

Heather went out for lunch with a friend and Jon and I had some soup.

I went out to Tesco to buy some vegetables and bread and when I got back I put the lamb in to roast and then took Totty out for a walk.

I then popped over to see Rene who is very worried about having a new gas boiler fitted tomorrow and how much mess it will make. The lady who she pays to do a few jobs for her is on holiday next week so will come over and hopefully, take her out for lunch. I sat and chatted to her for a little while but she was in a very funny mood and not 'funny ha, ha'.

When I got back I prepared my vegetables and before I knew it was 4.00 and Jane arrived. Typing this I just thought I hadn't fed the dog this afternoon and asked Jon if he had and he hadn't either! No wonder she was hanging around the kitchen when I was carving the meat! I don't feel so guilty about giving her all the lamb bits that were left on the board. Most unlike her not to tip her bowl over!

Riley was fast asleep when they arrived and when he woke he just laughed and gurgled and played with Auntie Heather.

We had our dinner and he was very good until we had finished when he started to grizzle a little so Jane fed him. She changed his nappy and he has a very sore bottom and screamed and screamed and it took a very, very long time to calm him down. After a lot of wind coming out of both ends he was all smiles again and just lay in Jane's arms and went to sleep. She put him in his car seat and took him home.

Jason had landed at Stansted from his stag weekend in the Algarve and so Jane took him a plate of roast dinner home as he said he would like it!

We watched the X Factor and even though it is only 9.20 I think I might go to bed as I am very tired.

Saturday

It was lovely to have a bit of a lie in this morning as we knew no builders were coming!

Heather left early to go to Milton to do the park run that she often does on a Saturday morning. When she came back we were getting ready to go for a coffee so we waited as she wanted to join us.

We went to Tesco Costa as the Costa in Newmarket, although better, is difficult to park on a Saturday.

While we were there she had batteries put into three of her watches!! I told her, in future, to do them as they go flat to save having to pay for three at once!

We got back home and I hung out my washing for the first time in a couple of weeks as I have not been able to use the patio. It is easier to reach the line now that the patio has been raised, still don't get as much sun as I would like though.

Heather left to go with her friend and 18 month old daughter, Heather's goddaughter, to a soft play area and I did some odd jobs around the house and Jon went into the garden. I also spent about two hours cleaning the bathrooms in particular, the bathroom Heather uses as the seals on the shower screen were a mess and I have been meaning to do them for ages but what a horrible, fiddly job it was!

Jon very kindly said he would cook dinner for me tonight! I had bought a Tesco meal deal yesterday so it was little more than putting it into the oven but the thought was there.

I sat down with a glass of wine and got on with my knitting and by the end of the night I had finished one front and got up to the armholes of the other front of a jacket I am making for Riley. I must say I do enjoy knitting and find it very relaxing.

Dinner was very good and I would recommend the venison cottage pie from Tesco, really tasty!

We watched the X Factor and then Jon went to bed and Heather came home from Jane's where she had spent the evening as Jason is away. Heather was very tired after her time at the soft play centre where she had had a very good time!

Clocks change tonight so I need to alter the clocks before I go to bed. I am not looking forward to the short days of winter.

Friday

Due to early morning rain the builder didn't show up today so it looks like we will have to wait a little longer to see the patio finished!

Another cracking headache this morning but once I am out of bed it goes away so I think I might need to check my pillows and maybe change them?

I did some cleaning and then Jon and I went into Newmarket to have a coffee. Jon has decided that the coffee at Costa Newmarket is better than the Costa at Tesco and after this morning I have to agree but it is not as easy to get to!

We had parked at Waitrose and after a bit of shopping in the town we went over to finish off our shopping at Waitrose. I wanted fish for dinner but I really don't like the fish at Waitrose, it always looks a funny colour so I didn't buy any. I did buy a lovely bouquet of flowers for Rene who was 91 today.

I got home and took the flowers over to Rene. She had some lovely presents but mostly alcohol! Two bottles of port and a bottle of brandy. I am not sure how long they will last - a long time I should think! She liked the flowers but I had to come home to get a vase as she only has little ones. After a little chat I went back home and Jane had arrived with Riley.

Jon had just made lunch and Jane fed Riley who, after his baby massage class, was very chilled and happy.

Jane and I went shopping to Bury St Edmunds to buy bigger sleep suits for Riley which proved more difficult than we thought mainly due to the shops having Christmas stock in or the suits only having openings down one leg - what's that all about?

I did find a few nice things in Next and after a good look around we headed to Tesco to buy some fish and Jane wanted a little something nice for her dinner as Jason is away in Portugal on a stag do and she wanted a treat.

Riley was by now due for a feed and so we mixed his bottle and drove to Tesco while I shook the bottle to cool it and Riley screamed - so impatient! By the time we parked the car he was very upset and hungry and although his bottle was warmer than usual he did drink it but he took a long time.

We then went into Tesco and Jane managed to find some sleep suits that she liked but they didn't have mittens on the hands!

We finally got home to Newmarket just after 6.00. I had told Jon I didn't have my keys and he said he would be in! When I got back he was out as was Heather so I assumed they had taken Totty out! Not impressed. I didn't have to wait long - Totty doesn't walk far - and they arrived back.

I got in and started cooking the dinner which was very nice.

We watched some TV and I booked for us to go and see Evita on 29 October in London. We wanted to go up to London to see the poppies so I  thought we should see a show at the same time. We are also booked to see Andre Rieu's 10th Anniversary film on 2 November at Bury St Edmunds so we have a busy week next week.

WEATHER
Overcast with some sun, 17 degrees but felt warmer.

Thursday

Jon didn't have a good night last night and was up twice to sort Bertie out, might have been the beer?

I woke with the most horrible headache and felt rough. I couldn't even blame it on wine as I didn't drink last night!

I had my breakfast and then just sat in a chair and watched the TV, finally catching up on Neighbours but still a long way to go.

The builder had another job to do today and said if he got it finished he would come round but he didn't. Hopefully, tomorrow it will be finished.

Jon spent some time in the garden after he had done some work in the office.

We had soup again for lunch and I really enjoyed my 'doing nothing day' the first I have had for a very long time.

I cooked a gammon joint for dinner and we had it with new potatoes and vegetables.

And that is about all I did, very lazy.

WEATHER

Wednesday

The builder was back this morning to get the step finished and then only the grouting to do!

I spent the morning making butternut squash soup and doing a few jobs around the house.

A man came to the door and I thought it was the man to fit my blind and I asked him in. He looked at me strangely and said 'I am just here to ask if I can take that roll of carpet out of the skip'. We had a good laugh about it and I told him I was expecting the man to fit my blind. I told him it would be OK to take the carpet as the builder had put it in there from another job. He said he would bring his van back later but he didn't turn up.

Jon went over to Ely to return his hearing aids as they are really no use to him and he got his money back. He needs to get something sorted though as he needs the TV so loud it drives me mad.

The man did come and fit my blind and I am really pleased with it and it looks very nice.

I cooked the mackerel for Rene and took it over to her and she was so excited about it and couldn't wait to tuck in so I left her to it.

We had soup for lunch and Jane came over with Riley as she had some shopping to do in Newmarket and she had a bowl of soup, too.

I cooked our dinner early as we were going out to the New Wellington pub down the road for the quiz night. Kirsty arrived straight from work but as the girls were all eating at the pub she didn't want food. It would be too late for Jon to eat at the pub as Bertie likes an early dinner!

One of our team had to drop out as she hurt her back so we asked James to join us as he had not been allowed on the girls team. One of the girls had dropped out but Heather managed to get one of the girls from work to fill in but they were only five on their team.

Jane and Abi arrived followed by James and we all walked down to the pub.

We had a really good night and it was a lot of fun made even better by us winning! It was a good team effort but Roger was spot on with the football section and as we played our joker on this section we had double points. We won a forty pound dinner voucher so we will arrange a night to use it sometime. Ian and I also won a raffle prize each.

Jane enjoyed herself and had texted Jason who told her Riley was fine and asleep in bed so she was happy.

It was quite late when we got back and said goodbye to the girls and they had all managed to get their cars out of the drive!

WEATHER
Sunny spells but a cold wind 14 degrees

Tuesday

I am back into my getting up at a sensible time routine and feel much better for it.

We were supposed to get the tail end of a hurricane today but this area got off very lightly all things considered and looking at other parts of the country. It was windy and it felt cold because of the wind but we did only have showers and not the rain that had been forecast - lucky us!

The weather was too bad for the builders today so we are still waiting for the patio to be finished.

Jon and I went out for a coffee and then I did a Tesco shop. I bought some swordfish for our dinner tonight and a mackerel for Rene as she tells me she likes it. I will cook it for her lunch tomorrow, she still has Cornish pasty for today!

I got back and then spent a long time on Amazon looking for a picture or something that will go on the wall in the hall as it all looks so empty. I also found a baby sound spa which plays white noise. I am concerned at him listening to it on Jane's mobile and it being near him. Hopefully, it will be here tomorrow. I read the reviews and they were all good and they are used in a clinic in the US so hopefully he will like the sound and it can clip onto his pram, cot or chair.

I finally had a call back from the people about the emergency alarm for Rene. Apparently they sent her an application form and have not had it back. I went over to speak to her and she said she thinks her nephew saw a letter from them but told her she needed to pay so she is now saying she does not want it!!!!!

I came back and then did a load of ironing and watched some TV.

I made our dinner, Heather was out tonight, and then we watched some TV.

Some friends we know from Spain and who now live in Hampshire called us this evening for a catch up and between Jon and I we were on the phone for an hour and twenty minutes! It was good to catch up with all the news from them.

I have been using the mouth wash and little toothbrushes today and nearly all of the swelling has gone down so fingers crossed my teeth will be staying in place for a little longer!!

WEATHER
Wild, wet and windy 14 degrees dropping to 7 degrees

Monday, 20 October 2014

Monday 20 October

I was up early to wash my hair and I wanted to make a dentist appointment and phone the doctor for Rene about her flu jab and alarm.

The builders arrived to carry on with the patio which is looking very good.

I rang the dentist and got an appointment for 3.30 but my gum is feeling a lot better due to the salt water I think.

I rang the surgery and spoke to Viv as Sonia is on leave. She said she would pass a message to Dr Wace about Rene's flu jab and she gave me the number to call about the alarm.

I started to do some housework and washing as I can't get to my line I took a basket of heavy/dark clothes to hang on Rene's line as she has a nice long one in her garden.

I went in to see her and while there the doctor came just after Rene remembered that 'a tall man came to give me a flu jab last week'! I know the doctor as I used to be her secretary and I explained that Rene had forgotten she had had the jab but I felt it was good for the doctor to check her over and she did say that her pulse was irregular so it is a good thing she is going to Cardiology next week for a check up.

The doctor then went on to say that really Rene should go to the surgery as house calls are a waste of resources and she felt sure I understood!! I explained how difficult it is to get her out with the car park being so far away and she can't walk. She told me that I should ask to use the doctors car park and they will provide a wheelchair for her. I was sooo angry with her! What happened to doctors caring about people. She is 91 and frail and can walk about ten steps! How bad does one have to be before you 'qualify' for a house visit?

I went home still very angry and felt like a naughty child they way she spoke to us both. So glad I did not register with this surgery when we came back from NZ.

We had lunch and I tried to sort out the emergency alarm for Rene but after three phone calls I didn't get very far so will have another try tomorrow.

It started to rain so I had to run over the road to get my washing in which meant another chat with Rene as I can't just walk in and out again.

I then got ready and went to the dentist. Unfortunately, things are not so good here. I have a bridge of three teeth and back in March I had an ulcer under the bridge, it is not the tooth but a collection on the gum where the gum is receding and the bone wearing. He told me that I am going to eventually have to have the bridge removed which will mean I will lose three teeth and the only option is implants, which are very expensive or false teeth on a plate!

For the time being he has told me to continue with the salt water and gave me a mouth wash and he has told me to keep it as clean as I can and once this settles down hopefully it will be sometime before it flares up again which he said it will and especially if I get run down. He didn't want to give me antibiotics even though it is six months since the last flare up. I just hope I can get it clean and keep it that way for a few years at least! False teeth!!!!!

I did a bit of shopping and came home and had a cuppa and watched the news before heating up some pasties for our dinner.

Heather came home and took Totty out with Jon and I rang Jane for a chat.

We had dinner and watched some TV and then I started to sort out my blog from last week which I will try and get done tomorrow if I can get on the computer!

Friday

I was up again before Jon this morning and had been very busy before the builders arrived.

This morning I made meatballs in a tomato and vegetable sauce, one for Rene and two to freeze for Heather, purĂ©ed the carrot soup, made the white sauce and assembled the lasagne to take with us to Cornwall and made one for Heather and one for Rene. I then made a batch of butterfly cakes and cooked a trout to take to Rene for her lunch - phew.

Glad to say Jon brought me a coffee back after he had been to the library.

I did a bit more ironing and then I am not sure where the rest of the day went!

I took the trout over to Rene and gave her a dish of soup and the meatballs and put them in her freezer so she has a few meals that she can enjoy without too much effort, as long as she remembers they are there! I can understand that she can't be bothered to make meals for herself, too much effort and it hurts her to stand up for too long. She is going out this afternoon to one of the neighbours 80th birthday dinners at 5.00!! I hope she enjoys herself.

We had lunch and a sit down and then I carried on getting things together to pack.

The builders are doing an amazing job with the patio. When Jon did it last time he just put a bed of sand down and then cemented the slabs on top. The builders have broken up the old slabs and at 12.00 a lorry came with the cement and we had four builders here spreading it and levelling it. The patio area now looks very big. Once the new step onto the garden is made Totty will be able to get down but at the moment she is very confused as to how she can get onto the grass and I end up lifting her over the wall.

The tree, I insisted on keeping, was up to the trunk in cement and Jon went out to trim the branches from the bottom. I hope I made the right decision insisting on it staying! Time will tell.

The builders said they will be here for three and possibly four days next week and as I have not been able to get anyone to come in and let Totty out they have said they are happy to do so and as Gareth wants to come in and sort the last few bits in the kitchen it works well and so hopefully, she will only be one day, all day in the house.

Kirsty rang this afternoon to say there had been an accident on the A14 and all traffic had to come through Newmarket and she was stuck but once she got to Newmarket she wanted to come here until the traffic cleared or it would take her another hour at least to get home. She has had two mornings this week stuck in traffic due to accidents.

She finally arrived and we sat and had a chat and she eventually left and I started our dinner. I cooked trout for Jon and I which was nice but I do hate the bones!

After dinner I went up to pack ready to go in the morning but not sure what time we will leave as it depends on Bertie!

Really looking forward to our trip and seeing everyone and hopefully I can relax a little more as it will not be too hot for Riley.

Off to bed now.

Thursday

Another busy day for me so I was up early and had my shower before the builders arrived.

I spent most of the morning doing my ironing between putting the washing on. I am now in the middle of ironing all of Jon's 65 plus shirts. I have washed them since they came back from NZ and they have all been on hangers but not ironed so I thought it was about time I sorted it. I haven't been able to hang out the washing as the builders are working on the patio where my line is. I should have thought about it and taken it over to Rene's house and hung it on her line. I did manage to catch up with some Neighbours while doing my ironing but I still have 23 to watch!

I got myself ready for my lunch date with Sonia and thought I had a lot of time and was putting my makeup on and looked at my watch and it was 12.45 and I had the table booked for that time!! Agh! I had to make a dash for it and get the builder to quickly move his van managed to get there in just under ten minutes!!

We had a lovely lunch and catch up but it was over too fast. Sonia is moving back from the other side of Bury to live in Newmarket so we will be able to meet up more often and go out for dinner and not have to rush in her lunchtime as she does now.

I then went home to pick up my shopping list and some things to drop off at the charity shop and then went back out to Tesco to do my shopping. It was, for late afternoon, very quiet and not many children about which made for easier shopping. I was sucked in to the Christmas mania and bought a Christmas pudding and some mince pies. They aren't for Christmas it is just because I like them and not having had them for five years I thought I would get one to eat now - yum!

When I got back the drive was full of a delivery of slabs for the patio and it took a bit of manoeuvring to get my car in.

I popped over to see Rene and took her some egg custards which I know she likes. She likes her new lamp so much she has asked me to get another for the other side of her bed which I will order when we get back from Cornwall. I wonder at what age you stop buying things because you know you will not be around much longer? Still, she might as well enjoy nice things and spend her money how she chooses. I told her that the paperwork for her medical alarm has been sent off and it has been put in her notes that the doctor needs to go and give her a flu jab at home. I really hope they don't forget or she will not be happy.

Back home and I went to see what the builders had done. The retaining wall is very impressive and makes the patio look very big. They are so precise with their work and have one of those things on a tripod to make sure it is all level. I wish I knew how those things worked? All the sand has been delivered now and I assume they will get on with laying the slabs tomorrow but we won't see it finished till we get back from Cornwall.

I cooked a sauce for a lasagne to take with us to Cornwall for Saturday dinner and I also made some carrot soup. Tomorrow I will make meatballs in a tomato sauce and then Heather should have enough to eat with what I already have in the freezer. Not sure what she did before we got back!

We had some lovely lamb, leg steaks with potatoes and vegetables for dinner and it was very good.

After dinner we watched Coronation Street and we are now only five episodes behind!

I rang my friend Viv in NZ and it was lovely to chat to her. She has been busy decorating and having her kitchen done, we are very alike and she can't sit still either!!

Right off for an early night as I have a lot to do tomorrow. My tummy is feeling so much better this evening so hopefully the pills are doing the trick.

WEATHER
Sunny but a chill wind 16 degrees.

Wednesday - builders start!

The builders arrived but it wasn't the best day for digging and they said they should have done it yesterday but they got to it and put up a gazebo and soon there was a trench.

I went out to the doctors for 8.30 as my doctor does not make appointments and you have to go or phone on the day to get one. When I got there it was still closed so I waited in the rain!

When it opened I went in and said I wanted an appointment with Dr Barclay and was told she was off today as she had changed her day!!!! I asked if I could see someone else as I had worked myself up to going and thought I was not going to miss the chance. they put me in for 9.30 with another doctor so I went home.

I did a few bits of finishing off in Heather's room before going back to the doctors. I have been having indigestion and tummy ache again, much the same as I had in March. He gave me more tablets and said I should have a blood test to check my ovaries are OK and if things don't settle to go back. He was very pleasant.

I waited for my prescription but they said they could not do the blood test and to go up to the hospital to have it done.

Up at the hospital there was a queue and you now have to take a ticket and go in when your number comes up. I was 74 and it was on 67 so not too bad.

I had the test and she said I would probably have a bruise as my veins are tiny and it did hurt a lot!

Back home again and had to leave my car in the street as the builder had his van and trailer across the drive.

I went over to see Rene and took her a plate of cheese and biscuits and some grapes all from the selection of cheese we had yesterday for lunch. I also took her new lamp over. She was just making a baked potato for her lunch, bless her. she said she would have the cheese for her tea and said it looked lovely.

I plugged her lamp in and removed the other one and she is really pleased with it as it is very pretty. She paid me for the lamp and made me take ten pounds for all my running around. I told her I bought it off the Internet and didn't run anywhere but she got cross and told me to take it so I had to.

Poor thing she can hardly walk and keeps saying she will go into a home but five minutes later says she is not ready yet, so sad.

When I came back I put Heather's room back together and cleaned the windows and it is sooo clean and tidy now and hopefully she might keep it like that. Jon just need to put the shelves back together that he has painted red and then it is finished - phew one more job done!

The builders got on very well and have dug such a deep trench you would think we were having an extension. Jon didn't do anything like that when he put the last patio down!. As this patio will be higher we will need a step and they have dug out for that, too. They left just before five.

I took Totty out and half way round it started to rain so by the time I got back I was pretty wet as was she.

I realised I had not even thought about dinner for tonight so had to go and rummage in the freezer and found a lamb casserole and cooked some vegetables. That was a bit of luck.

We watched some TV and it was all very peaceful.

WEATHER
Overcast with some showers and some sunny spells 14c

Tuesday

Jon was up early this morning again to let the builders in but it was raining and he had a text to say they weren't coming. Jon replied and said the rain was forecast for first thing and he was right as by 9.00 it was sunny and clear!

The new lamp arrived for Rene and Jon will get a bulb for it and then put it together as it has lots of bits to assemble it.

Jon went to Homebase and then to Ely to collect his hearing aids, again!

I had to get some housework done and tidy up before going out to Waitrose to buy some lunch for Ann and Marilyn who were due at 12.30.

I did my shopping and was very quick and stuck to my list and was back home in half an hour. There was a message on the answerphone from Ann saying they would be late as she was stuck in the bank but would be here by 1.00.

I got lunch ready and set the table and Jon came back. I then had another phone call from Ann to say they had taken the wrong direction on the M11 and were heading for London but would turn around!!! Lol! The next call I got an hour later they were in the BP garage on the Bury Road so after giving her directions - well it is seven years since she has been here - they arrived ten minutes later.

We had a lovely afternoon and enjoyed our lunch and just chatted and ate far too much. They both loved the house and how it looks now apart from the girls and my friend Mary, who has seen it as it has changed, they are the first people to see it and I was very happy at their reaction.

When we were in Spain and they day Ann came over to the villa for lunch Kirsty had not been well and so had not really spoken to her. Kirsty had to go to bed and so had not said goodbye so I sent her a text to say Ann was coming and Kirsty came after work as did James and we all sat chatting and before we knew it was 6.30!

Everybody left and we cleared up and watched some TV I made Jon and omelette later on and I had some cheese.

A very lovely day and it was lovely to see Ann and Marilyn.

Rain first thing then sunny 15 degrees

Monday

We were expecting the builders to arrive early this morning and a skip was due to be delivered so we were both up early.

I wanted to get on with the decorating but thought I had better get dinner sorted for tonight so that I didn't need to stop too early. I made a big dish of cauliflower and broccoli cheese with bacon pieces to go with some fish I had. I also made a small dish for Rene as she loves broccoli. I made a Victoria sponge for tea tomorrow when Ann comes. and it was still only 9.00!

The builders finally arrived at the same time as the skip. They brought all their tools, sand and cement but said as it was going to rain they would not start digging out until tomorrow and after looking what they had to do they left to finish another job.

I rang the Rookery to speak to my friend, Sonia, and to arrange lunch with her and also to ask her about a doctor coming out to Rene to giver her a flu jab. I also asked if the doctor had done anything about the alarm for Rene to have round her neck. As far as she knows nothing has been done so it is just as well I rang. She will now chase it up for me.

I popped over to see Rene and she was very pleased with her meal and said she would have it for lunch. I told her I had found a new touch lamp for her, the same as the one she has, and she told me to go ahead and order it as she had had to sleep with the light on all night as her other lamp is too difficult for her to switch on and she is usually up twice in the night to go to the toilet.

I did suggest to her that we buy some walkie talkies and she thought that was very funny. I was being serious!

I came back and ordered the lamp which will be here tomorrow - I love Amazon!

I could put it off no longer and so got out the pasting table and mixed my paste and started to cut and hang this very bold wallpaper. I think Heather might have nightmares sleeping in a room with this paper!

I made good progress and had three pieces up when Jon called to say he had made me a sandwich. A quick stop and then I got back to it.

The paper went up well apart from the second piece which was a bit of a 'B'. I managed to finish it and then started on the gloss and got it all done before dinner and I didn't think I would do that. Really pleased with it all. I won't feel guilty having my day off with Ann tomorrow and then Wednesday I can get everything back into the room and hang the curtains as the new pole should be here by then. I thought they had arrived this afternoon as Jon took a big roll like parcel in this afternoon but it was our new rug for the end of the kitchen where we have a breakfast table. I was a little worried about the colours but, I think, it goes really well. It is all coming together now.

We had dinner and the cauliflower and broccoli cheese was good but the fish, a ready meal from Tesco, was very rubbery so I won't be buying that again it is easier to buy fresh and cook it myself.

We watched some TV and enjoyed the new detective programme that started tonight, Grantchester, which is filmed in Cambridge and the village of Grantchester just outside. Some nice scenery of Cambridge, I would like to know how they managed to film outside King's College with no tourists about?

Time for an early night I think.

WEATHER
Dry to start then rain and wind 14 degrees.

Sunday

I had a nice lie in this morning as I knew Jon was up and watching the Grand Prix and I am not interested in it.

After my shower I went down for breakfast and watched one of the many episodes of Neighbours I have recorded - one day I will be up to date!

Jon didn't want to go out for coffee this morning so I went into Newmarket on my own and changed the picture frame I bought on Friday from TK Maxx as it had chips in the corners when I took the wrapping off.

When I got back I popped over to see Rene and have a chat with her, she hates Sundays as they are very long for her. The bulb in her bedside lamp had broken last night so I changed it for her but the lamp still did not work. After checking the bulb I think it is the lamp that is broken. She told me it had a switch but I could not find it. I then discovered it is a touch lamp and she said she just hits it and it works. I think she may have hit it too hard. It is plugged in behind her bed so I will have to wait until Marie is there tomorrow and we can pull the bed out and swap the lamp for one that works. I left her to come home and she was going to heat the fish pie I made for her, I hope she likes it.

I got back home and thought I had better take the dog for a walk before I get stuck into painting and then it would be late and I might not feel like going for a walk. She was good today and walked all the way round our route.

Once back I had a quick coffee and I then went up to Heather's room and carried on with the preparation. I am not sure who decorated the room last, it wasn't me, but emulsion paint has been used on the woodwork and it is all flaking off so I need to get rid of it - a lot of work!

I worked till I felt hungry, Jon made his own lunch today, and then I had some toast and Marmite before continuing with the decorating. I started painting the walls but it is going to take some time as there is not much room to move and it is a case of shifting furniture around.

I did as much as I could and then had to call Jon to help me move furniture before I could carry on.

Jon is painting a shelf bright red to go in Heather's room. I am so glad she is away as there is no way she could sleep in the room and I have taken so much stuff from her room and put it in the two spare rooms to give me enough space. she has way too much stuff.

I managed to get all the white done on the walls apart from behind the wardrobe which will have to move when I have completed the rest of the room. I am only painting it white the same as the ceiling but it is very hard to see where you have been. Hopefully, in the morning, I will be able to see where I have been. Depending on how it looks as to whether I can get on with hanging the paper, I hope so.

I had taken a chicken roast from the freezer last night and so I put that in the oven to roast. I made a salad to go with it and it was very nice.

I ordered the new curtain poles from Amazon and hope they will be here by Wednesday. I have also been looking at buying a walkie talkie and giving one to Rene so that I can keep in touch and know that she is alright. I will have a chat with her tomorrow and see what she thinks.

We watched Sunday night at the Palladium and really enjoyed it, good Sunday TV then the X Factor and then some Corrie. so much easier when Heather is not here.

Off to bed now and hopefully the weather will not be too bad tomorrow and put the builders off from doing the patio!!!

WEATHER
Sunny but a little cooler 16 degrees

Saturday, 4 October 2014

Saturday

Heather woke me at 2.00 and I thought it was like their last night in Spain when the alarms failed! It wasn't, she was having a panic attack and needed her mum! There is a tummy bug going round and as she hates being sick she had blown it up in her mind and was in a state.

I made her a camomile tea and sat with her doing her breathing exercises and she eventually calmed down and I went back to bed.

She woke me again at 3.00 as she felt worse. The silly thing is she knows what they are and that she will get over them but while it is happening it is awful for her. She needed to be up at 3.30 anyway so at 3.25 I told her she might as well get up and start getting ready which would hopefully, take her mind off things.

She got up and ready and woke Rachael and then Jon got up and they all got ready and left the house at 4.00. Hopefully, she will be better once she has checked in. I do feel for her having these attacks and know what it is like and she is good and knows she can't let them rule her.

I went back to bed and fell asleep and vaguely remember Jon coming back but I didn't wake till 8.30 when I got up but left Jon to sleep.

It was looking very overcast this morning and not like the weather we have been used to. I had a cup of tea but didn't feel like eating breakfast.

Jon got up and had breakfast and I had a shower and then started to sort out Heather's room ready for decorating. I need to get it done and finished by Thursday to allow myself one day to pack for Cornwall.

I popped over to see Rene and take her the fish pie. I knew Marie was bringing her fish and chips today so told her to freeze the pie if she was not going to eat it. She asked me to buy her some brioche as she liked the ones I took her last week. She also asked me to get her some plums or peaches but I don't think there will be any peaches in the shops now.

We went to Tesco and Costa for a coffee and then did our shopping before going home.

It was just starting to rain but I wanted to get Totty out for her walk as it might be too wet later. She was not happy to walk and kept stopping. It was starting to rain and it was windy so I gave up and took her back home.

I then got stuck in to sorting out Heather's bedroom and took as much as I could out and into the spare room. Hopefully I can work around the rest. What a lot of stuff she has!

We had lunch and it was by now raining hard and looked pretty miserable outside.

Back to her room and I did all the preparation work, filling holes and sanding. I would like to start on the walls tomorrow. I had a phone call from Ann in Spain to say she is over and would like to come and see us on Tuesday so I am under more pressure to get this room finished.

I went over to see Rene and take her the brioche and plums. She told me she had not enjoyed her fish and chips as the batter was too crispy and she said it is now very expensive! I had a little chat with her and then went back home.

Jon went to Waitrose to buy our dinner and came back with some nice Indian dishes and he sorted it all out and I sat down and enjoyed a glass of wine.

We watched X Factor while we had dinner and then another episode after dinner so we are now up to date for the first time with X Factor at least.

I am really tired now so I think it is early to bed for me.

I had a message from Heather and she arrived OK. I just hope she can now have a good time and no more panic attacks.

WEATHER
Overcast, rain and sun 16 degrees.

Friday, 3 October 2014

Friday

Another lovely sunny day here and we are into October. I love the sunshine, long may it last. Hopefully we might get some good sunny days when we go to Cornwall.

I was awake early today and so I got up as I had a lot to do. My plan was to do my housework in the morning and then knit or read or watch TV in the afternoon.

I got on well with my cleaning and then Jon and I went out for a coffee and to buy some fish for dinner.

We then went to the builder's merchant to look at doors for upstairs. We found some at a very good price so we now need to find out when Gareth can fit them but I don't think it will be soon!

It was then off to the Fiesta Blinds to get a blind for the kitchen. The sun is so much lower now and I get blinded in the afternoon when I am cooking.

The lady gave us two big fat books but I didn't see anything I liked but as I was not sure what I wanted it was difficult. The third book had two patterns in that I liked so we brought one of the samples home.

The sample is a perfect colour match so I rang the lady with the measurements so that she could give us a price and one of the fitters will come out to measure up properly on Wednesday. It will take three weeks for it to be made.

My new bread bin and sink tidy arrived from Amazon and I am pleased with them. I love Amazon but it makes you lazy!

We had lunch and then I carried on with my housework and Jon hung some more pictures, we are just about there now with pictures but still need a couple of frames.

I went into Newmarket to get a ball for one of the piercings Heather has in her ear and she lost the ball. I did some shopping and bought some toiletries that I needed and then went home.

We had a cuppa and then I made a fish pie for our dinner and two small ones for Rene.

I popped over to see Rene and she is OK but has decided not to go out tomorrow for lunch. The 'girl' as she calls the lady she pays to help her usually takes her out on Saturdays but I think she is still not feeling right since her fall so it is probably better she stays in.

We had our dinner which was very nice and then we watched some TV.

Jon went to bed about 9.30 as he needs to be up to take Heather to the airport at 4.00.

Heather was out for dinner tonight and came in at 10.00 with Rachael who she is going on holiday with. They had been out for a friends birthday dinner and did not intend to be so late but the friend was 50 minutes late! Hmm! they have to be up at 3.30 to go to the airport.

It is now gone 11.00 and Heather has had a shower and washed her hair and is all packed and now in bed which is where I am going.

WEATHER
Sunny and warm 20 degrees

Thursday

I was up early this morning and got ready and then changed the bed as I didn't have time to do it on Monday and next week the builders are coming to do the patio so I won't be able to use my washing line so not sure where I will be able to hang everything!

I rang the hairdresser and managed to get an appointment for after lunch to have my hair cut which is long overdue. I am going to a place that my friend goes to and some of her friends so hopefully it will be ok.

Jon and I went out for a coffee and then to Tesco for a few bits. I bought a lovely orchid for the living room which I think will look nice on the mantelpiece.

We then went to Homebase and I bought the wallpaper for Heather's bedroom which I am going to decorate while she is in Tenerife.

Jon collected his new registration plates as his other ones seem to be fading.

We got home and had lunch and Jane rang to say she was coming round and arrived just as I was leaving for the hairdressers.

I enjoyed my trip to the hairdressers and got along well with Nickie. She has visited Australia and her parents have been to NZ twice so we were able to chat about things. she has given me a very nice cut and it looks nice. I just hope I can do it as well when I wash it myself.

I got back and Riley was fast asleep and I had a chat with Jane. Riley is now on bottles during the day and breast at night and seems to be very happy like this. He woke up and she fed him and he was happy to lie on his blanket for a while and gurgle!! So cute.

Jane left to go and cook dinner for Jason and Heather who wanted to see Riley before she goes on Holiday on Saturday as she won't see him for two weeks as we go to Cornwall as she comes back from Tenerife.

I went across to see Rene for half an hour and showed her a video I took of Riley and she thought he looked so cute. She is doing OK but is still very stiff and sore.

I then took Totty for a walk before coming home and making dinner for Jon and I.

We watched some of the many, many episodes of Coronation Street that we have recorded. I am not sure when, if ever, we will get up to date!

Heather came home from Jane's and showed me her new purchases - so many clothes she is worse than me!

WEATHER
Cloudy start then sunny 19 degrees

Wednesday, 1 October 2014

Wednesday

I had a bit of a lie in this morning as I was so late to bed.

I didn't really do very much and the morning seemed to fly by.

I made a baked potato with butter and cheese and took it across to Rene. She was just putting a ready meal in the oven and said she would eat the potato later. she had a load of washing in her machine and I said I would go back and hang it out for her.

After our lunch I went across to Rene and she told me she had eaten the baked potato but did not like her ready meal so at least she had something to eat. She is feeling very stiff and sore around her hip area but on the whole not too bad after her night on the floor.

I hung out her washing and brought home a jumper to hand wash for her.

We had our lunch and the I started ironing and watched Neighbours.

Jon has been working on the garden and it is looking very tidy. We had a phone call from Gareth, the builder, to say the slabs we had chosen for the patio were now unavailable and he said he would call round with a catalogue to choose some others.

He called round in the afternoon when I was doing my ironing and we chose more slabs. He also spent a while trying to work out what we could do about getting the microwave shelf sorted so that I can have it up off the work bench as planned. He has come up with a solution and hopefully it will work.

I cooked meatballs with a tomato and pepper sauce and we had them with pasta and salad and even Heather said she enjoyed dinner!

We watched some TV and I did a search on Amazon looking for a rug for the old family room part of the house. Amazing how many hours you can lose on the Internet. It was gone midnight when I went to bed!

WEATHER
Sunny spells 19 degrees
